nonia branch of Oregon Realty
Co. as an associate broker.

years.
Banks branch will
hold Open House
The Banks branch of US
Bank is inviting the community
to an open house on Tuesday,
July 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30
p.m. There will be popcorn, hot
dogs, drinks, movies, prizes,
kids’ activities and more, espe
cially fun.
“Come meet the staff and
join the fun,” urged Manager
Pam Walther.
The bank is located at the
corner of S. Main Street (Hwy.
47) and Oak Way.
Western Auto gone
True Value is here
As Western Auto stores un
dergo changes on a nationwide
basis, the Vernonia associate
store, owned and operated for
the past 34 years by Arnie and
Mary Tolonen,
has been
phased out - but only as W est
ern Auto.
The Tolonen family is still op
erating the store, at 834 Bridge
Street, and son Craig has be
come a valuable part of the or
ganization, too.
Western Auto is gone, but
the new True Value sign will
probably be up by the time you
read this. The only problem
now, will be remembering to put
the correct name on our checks
when we pay our bills!
Forest workshop will emphasize improved roads
A two-day Forest Roads
Workshop will be held in sever
al Oregon communities to help
family forestland owners as
sess their forest roads. The
road assessment process will
help determine if they can im
prove water quality or fish habi
tat. Similar voluntary measures
were undertaken by the forest
industry several years ago,
making a significant difference.
The workshop is also appro
priate for road and logging con
tractors, foresters, watershed
council employees, volunteers
and others interested in forest
roads. Participants will learn
how road systems can be im
proved to better meet forest
management goals in a cost-ef
fective manner.
Day one of the two-day
workshop will be a classroom
session that describes the im-
portance of quality habitat, how
to assess existing roads for
problems, how to maintain and
improve forest roads and how
to develop contracts for project
work. Advice will also be pro
vided on how to locate techni
cal and financial assistance
that is available to small wood
land owners. An optional
evening session - “Case Stud
ies from Local Landowners” -
will also be offered.
Day two will be an all-day
field session that consists of a
hands-on exercises to assess
an existing road and discuss
maintenance and improvement
options with the participants.
Information about easements
and road use issues may also
be discussed.
The fee to attend a work
shop is $50 per participant. It
includes notebook and materi-
als, lunch, and transportation to
the field site.
The workshop schedule is:
July 8-9, Oregon City
July 23-4, Forest Grove
August 12-13, Eugene
Sept. 9-10, Medford
Sept. 16-17, Prineville
Those interested in attend
ing can register on-line at
<http://outreach.cof.orst.edu/ro
ads/>, or call the Conference
Coordinator at (541) 737-2329.
The workshops are co-spon-
sored by the Oregon State Uni
versity College of Forestry, the
Oregon Department of Forest
ry, the Oregon Forest Re
sources Institute (OFRI), the
Oregon Watershed Enhance
ment Board (OWEB), the Asso
ciation of Oregon Loggers and

estlands of the Oregon Board
of Forestry. Funding is provided
by grants from OWEB and
