Page 8 The INDEPENDENT, May 1, 2003 5WW ~ ~ ---------— - --------- Sits and Bites ÜiÜÚiftii By Jacqueline Ramsay Bing, Bang, Boom. April 11. My bubble has burst into bloom all on account of Mr. ?. #1 - Personally, I do not know him and hadn’t heard of him until the City Council Christmas party of 2002. So, why am I so happy? Well, let’s go back at least two past Council Christmas Parties. They have a White Elephant gift exchange. That’s point one. #2 - Mr. ? had an old, useless briefcase full of S&H Green Stamps. Being funny, he gift wrapped it. Mr. ? #2 got it and re-wrapped it for the next party. Everyone laughed, recognizing the present. #3 - Only a newcomer would not know what it was. Guess who got it? Me. I’m an old S&H Green Stamp lover. So, since there was a cata logue and many empty booklets, I started past ing...for six hours. There was a woman’s shoe box full of books when I got done. Following in structions, I filled out the papers, insured it for the amount required and sent it on its way. That was March 14. #4 - On April 11, I received a check. The books were worth only $1.20 each, but I and a friend are going to enjoy a two day, one night trip to the coast to enjoy sun, sand and surf. Thanks to a joke. Best White Elephant I ever got. I made a copy of the check, if you’d like to see it. It seems the “So What” group is at work and school isn’t even out yet. What do I mean? One evening, someone ordered pizzas from Leonetti’s and didn’t pick them up at the time quoted. So a phone call to the number given said “Don’t know anything about it. Try so and so or such and such.” My number was one that was given. I couldn’t use two pizzas even if I had been home. Leonetti’s still had them at closing time. Whoever you are, that is a dumb way to get ___ __ __ your kicks. You cost someone time and money and it burns me. Stop and think of the reputation you’re building for yourself. It will catch up with you and you may not like the consequences. Things you may have missed in the past two weeks: At the lake - little bitty baby ducks, five in one clutch and two in another. I’ve seen them only once. There are two pairs of Mergansers at the lake, also one Blue Heron. There was a lone Cackler Goose visiting last week. Easter Sunday, some one donated a Lady Peking Duck to the lake. She’s lonesome. Also a bite - I know a Beaver marked two of our trees with its pearly whites; but who, very thoughtlessly, took a pocket knife to one of the trees. People who care for our city are trying to make the lake a pleasant place. Whittling on the trees can kill more than a tree. Easter dinner at the Senior Center - ham and the trimmings. Very well received. The Golden Oldies were fantastic, as usual. If you need entertainment for a gathering, call Duke Gortler. He is the main chair. The Golden Oldies are a group of folks who love their instru ments and the old songs. Professionals, retired performers, friends, strangers (but not for long) who love to get together for their own pleasure and others too. Duke, Eleanor, Darrel, Ron, Al, Bob 1 and Bob 2, Necia, Everett, Mike, Pat and Dolores and once in a while, Big Bill and his spoons. Word spreads and sometimes someone drops in for a day; and maybe they keep coming back. The center says come in and enjoy a trip back to good music. If you feel moved, get up and dance. The Easter Cantata was well received. Thank you for supporting the Community Choir in its ef fort. Do you enjoy good Mexican Food? There’s a new restaurant in Scappoose, “Ixtapa.” I had ala carte Chimichanga with salad, $4.95. I couldn’t eat all of it. Of course, salsa and chips included.
