The INDEPENDENT, October 3, 2002 Page 5 Vernonia home destroyed by morning fire A mid-morning fire, October 1, caused extensive damage to the Vernonia home of Jake and Kathy Wolfe at 1800 State Ave. In the absence of vacationing Vernonia Fire Chief Paul Epler, and because of a firefighter shortage in Vernonia, the Mist- Birkenfeld and Banks Fire Dis tricts were called in. In the meantime, form er Ver nonia firefighter Kevin Roberts was at home and overheard the call on his scanner. Roberts went to the fire hall and, finding that there was no one available who was qualified to operate the engine, drove it to the Wolfe home with less experienced volunteers. Roberts’ quick ac tion may have kept a bad fire from being worse. More help soon arrived from Mist and Banks. Scappoose Fire District also helped, staying at the fire hall to provide additional cover age as needed. Many Vernonia firefighters rushed to the scene from their jobs in the woods and as far away as Hillsboro (including Vernonia Volunteer Fire Lieu tenant Darrel Wolfe, the son of Jake and Kathy Wolfe). The interior of Jake and Kathy Wolfe’s home was gutted by a fire of unknown origin. No one was injured and the family pets made it to safety.
