Very few people will confuse lagniappe, chiarusco and syzy- gy with their everyday vocabu lary, but these words were a necessary part of last month’s Vernonia Senior Spelling Bee. After 100 words, Carol Saw yer and Tobie Finzel were tied for the lead, with George Gans in a solid third place. Ten words later, including lagniappe and chiarusco, Sawyer and Finzel gave each other a high five as they were still tied! Nine more words, and Finzel was stumped by syzygy, but a great time was enjoyed by both participants and spectators. Audeen Wagner, winner at the national contest two years ago, organized and prepared the event. Noni Andersen, last year’s local winner, read the words. There were about 25 contestants.
