Community ............ By Jacqueline Ramsay I ’ ve had an e x tra w eek to th in k a b o u t what to w r ite a b o u t, so, once again: The center has asked me to let the public know that we have NO facilities to wash, dry, iron, mend or dry clean clothing, bedding, drapes or rugs. When we receive such things that are no longer want ed by you because they are dirty, all we can do is pay the garbage bill, because we can’t, in good conscience, send it on to Goodwill, St. Vincent DePaul or ARC. Now, back to the business of cutting the grass and planting flowers between rain squalls. The Tuesday/Thursday group held an appreciation lunch honoring Cook Carol Davis and Pastry Queen Rosie McCoy. The Spelling Bee netted, First - Carol Sawyer, Second - Tobie Finzel and Third - George Gans. Vernonia Cares is looking for a new computer-smart office worker. They can still use vol unteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The election is over. Happy? yes - no. If you missed the City Coun cil meeting on May 20, you missed a first time happening for Vernonia. We now have a Lady Mayor, Cindy Ball. It must be Spring. Why? Well, because we women are stirring things around again, or still, or yet, whichever you think is correct. In the Thrift area, more clothes racks, also, I’m giving the craft area a face lift. Have patience, please. June Calendar: Center business meeting the 14th at 1:00 p.m. Father’s Day Lunch and pro gram, Noon on the 12th. Come in and sign up. Join in the fun. Five Area Luncheon on the 24th in St. Helens at noon. Sort of a quiet lunch month, but July is coming. July 3, we celebrate with door prizes and ? On July 4, we will be closed until 5:00 p.m., when we’ll open for viewing of auction items. The auction starts at 7:00 p.m. Remember, there will be a “Kids Only” auc tion included, with kids from 5 to 14 as the bidders and buy ers. This auction is fun and inter esting. No furniture, bikes, beds, chairs, radios, TVs and such. You may not know you need something until you see it. Collectibles, antiques, dishes, kids’ books from the 30s Come, bring the kids, join the fun. After the auction, go across the street for the fireworks. Then, on July 8, we will start our “Christmas in July and Hal loween, Too,” sale through July 13. Lots of goodies, clothes, decorations, gift ideas, party costumes, you’ll never know w hat’s in store unless you come in. Signing off with a big Thank You to all who have brought in good, clean, sellable items, and those who have remembered we still take newspapers for cancer research; also to our fou r angels with hammers, saws, nails, brooms and mus cle power. Love you... Because of funding shortages the Colum bia County Council of Seniors now provides meals only three days a week. Davis has not only solicited funds for the “Tuesday-Thurs day Club,” she also prepares the meals. McCoy has stepped in to make each meal memo rable with specially baked desserts. Funds and supplies are still needed to continue the meals, and help with meal preparation would be appreciated. Dona tions to the local program should be made out to Tues day-Thursday Club, not to the Vernonia Senior Center.
