Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, May 16, 2002 Student musicians from BHS and VHS prepare for Music in May Students from Vernonia and Banks will join about 500 high school student musicians from throughout Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho for the annual Music in May festival at Pacific University. Music in May offers student musicians three days of work shops, lessons and rehearsals. Students stay in residence halls with school chaperones for the three-day festival and conclude the weekend with a concert featuring band, orches tra and choir students. Participants from Banks are Karin Larson, Kelly Zietz and Deanna Liesegang. The festival will conclude with a concert on Saturday, May 25, at 3:00 p.m. at Pacific University’s Athletic Center, just north of the Pacific University campus, on Main Street in For est Grove. Larry Clausen, vice president for academic affairs, will serve as moderator for the grand finale, which will feature four conductors, including Dr. Michael Burch-Pesses, Pacif ic’s director of bands. Three guest conductors have select ed challenging programs for their ensembles to perform in the finale concert. Dr. Edith Copley, director of choral stud ies at Northern Arizona Univer- sity in Flagstaff, Arizona, will serve as the conductor for the choir. Gordon Johnson, musi cal director and conductor of the Great Falls Symphony Or chestra, will conduct the or chestra. Conducting the band will be Ray Cramer, director of bands at Indiana University. Twenty-six Pacific University students will also serve as proctors during the festival. Music in May was started in 1948 by former Pacific Univer sity music education professor Richard Greenfield to assist high school string instrumental ists. The festival was subse quently expanded to include band and choir. The annual event is sponsored by the uni versity’s music department and is the only college-sponsored high school music festival in the Tractor safety clinic will be held - Youth, ages 14 to 17 must complete a state of Oregon ap proved training program to op erate or assist in operating trac tors or farm machinery. A Tractor Safety Clinic will be held Friday, May 31, from 4.00 to 9.00 p.m. and Saturday, June 1, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The cost for the clinic is $30. A Farm Machinery Clinic will be held Friday, June 7, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 8, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cost for the clinic is $15. Both clinics will be held at Hillsboro High School, 3285 SE Rood Bridge Road, in Hillsboro. The clinics are open to the first 30 participants. Registra tion forms are available at the extension office. Pre-registra tion is required by May 25. Admission to the grand fi nale concert is $5.00 for adults; $3.00 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be pur chased at the door or in ad vance by contacting the Music in May office at 503-359-2198. Northwest. High school choral, band and orchestra students are se lected based on the recom mendation of their schools’ mu sic directors, and the instru mentation needs of the Music in May ensembles. Free workshop for students and parents on how to pay for college The workshop will provide college-bound students and their families with information about applying and qualifying for financial aid; understanding financial aid reports; borrowing for college; the differences in federal student loan programs and more. Attendees also will be provided with resources that detail the financial aid process. Northwest Oregon high school students and their fami lies are invited to attend “Pay ing for College,” a free work shop on planning and paying for college, sponsored by the Sallie Mae Fund, the philan thropic arm of Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading provider of ed ucation funding, to be held on Saturday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. The workshop will be held at Tigard High School Cafeteria, 9000 SW Durham Road, Tigard. One attendee will win a $500 scholarship toward the cost of higher education.
