The INDEPENDENT, May 16, 2002 Page 11 Year’s final Renaissance Assembly honors students and teachers New technology played a big part of the final Renaissance Assembly of the year. Tradi tionally, the spring assembly is a tribute to the staff of Vernonia High School. This year, using new video technology, Nicole Potter put together an “Oscar Night Presentation”. Narrated by Megan Peura and Heather Forster the video presentation featured short video clips of each staff member paired with movie or television clips that were selected by the leader ship class. Kendall Graham also used the new PowerPoint technology to present a tribute to retiring teacher Steve Cal houn with a “This is Your Life” presentation. Renaissance Assemblies recognize students for perfect attendance, a grade point aver age of over 3.6 or for improve ment in GPA of .5 or greater. This assembly recognized the largest group of students yet, a total of 89 students were Re naissance winners. Students are entered in a grand prize drawing at each Renaissance Assembly throughout the year. Jennifer Bernardi won the grand prize drawing, for a $150 gift certificate to Washington Square stores. Jr. High musical will feature 50s “The Nifty Fifties," a musical highlighting the 1950s, will be pre sented by the junior high drama class at Washington Grade School on Friday, May 31, at 7:00 p.m. in the WGS gym. Forty- eight students are involved in the production under the direction of Bonnie Holce and assistant director Malin Campbell. Tickets are $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors/students. Hard work by the Vernonia High School leadership class will result in risers for this year’s graduation ceremony. The class raised $4,375.08 in donations and sales of tickets, which they supplemented by transferring money from the pop fund to secure the needed $5,703. The risers have been ordered and will arrive in time for graduation, eliminating the need to borrow risers from Clatskanie High School.
