Our spring weather is more like late winter, 40 degrees and lower at night, daytime, you guess. It’s been keeping shop pers from getting out. You can’t even dig up the garden. Don’t plant your veggies yet, they will chill out. Wait till end of May. The ducklings are sure cute to watch. One clutch of 12 wow! Now, this is a rundown of what’s going on at your Senior Center - all kinds of things are flying around. So.... ColCo is still in business, honest. Monday and Wednes day, they go to Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Beaverton and Port land. They are in town Monday and Thursday. Phone 503-429- 4301. The hours are controlled by Columbia County Council of Seniors/ColCo Transportation. Bread days are Wednesday a.m. (fresh), and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Thrift Store is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday Silver Tea will benefit library The public is invited to attend a Silver Tea hosted by the Vernonia Study Club on May 15, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the Thiele-Petti Meeting Room of the Vernonia Public Library. All proceeds from the tea will be used to benefit the library. A display of dolls is being arranged by Sylvia Kaufman for the event, and live music will be provided by Madeleine Gen- dron and her students. From the time of its organi zation and inception, the local public library has been a focus of interest for the Study Club. Coffees, teas and other events provided funds to pay for a librarian and to purchase mate rials when it was an independ ent entity. Even after the library became an essential adjunct to the City of Vernonia, it remained near and dear to the interests of Study Club mem bers. Two years ago, the club decided to hold an annual Sil ver Tea and use the proceeds for the benefit of the library. In 2000, benefits from the tea pur chased a laminating machine and supplies; the following year, a second book cart was purchased. The items pur chased were selected only after consultation with Librarian Nancy Burch. Everyone is invited to enjoy the tea. Trying to put out better-cared-for gar ments. We still have many “bag" items. We also welcome shoppers who come in only to look and visit. Coming up May 8 will be our Mothers’ Day dinner. Come, join us. We are going to honor the oldest, youngest, and oth ers, also Mother with most chil dren, one with the most grand children and the newest Moth er. Maybe if you come, you will Boy Scouts annual Mother’s Day B’fast There will be no work for Mom at the third annual Moth er’s Day Pancake Breakfast hosted by Boy Scout Troop 201 on Mother's Day, May 12th, from 7:30 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. at the Scout Cabin. Tickets are $4.00 per person and children under three years are free. There will be a free corsage for Mom when tickets are pur chased in advance. Natal Grange Dinner Natal Grange will hold their annual Roast Beef Dinner on May 5 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The grange is located 12 miles north of Vernonia on Hwy 47. Cost of the dinner will be $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. be the one wno is nonorea. May 18 is the Spelling Bee. Come sign up. It was fun last year. Willie Brewer has retired as our hostess. We want to thank her for the many uncounted, tireless hours she has given to the center. Also, thank her for her decorating and crafting abilities. We will miss her, but wish her well as she moves on to other opportunities in the future. If you see any of these folks, wish them Happy Birthday. The second annual Senior Spelling Bee will be held at the Vernonia Senior Center on Sat urday, May 18, at 1:00. The only requirement for the event is that participants must be 50 years or older. The format will be the same as last year: Contestants will be asked to spell 100 words, in writing, and there will be a short break between each set of 25 words. Refreshments will be served between sets. Last year’s spelling bee was very successful. Since this year’s event is on a Saturday, the Center is hoping to wel come people who work during the week. It’s free and it’s fun, so sharpen up your vocabulary and join the spellers at the Senior Center on May 18. We have a new look, We have a new stylist. We have a new store, and we're getting (Buds & <Siooms Mother’s Day is May 12th the Forest Grove Senior Center at 10:00 a.m. and at Pumpkin Ridge Grange Hall on Sunday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m. If I’ve missed anything, I’ll catch up later.
