The DAR G ood C itizens program and scholar ship contest is intended to encourage and re ward the qualities of good citizenship. The contest is in two parts: The first part is a question on how the candidate has tried to mainfest the qualities of a good citizen, a copy of the ir official grade transcript and two letters of recom mendation, one from a close adult associate other than a fam ily member, and one from a school faculty mem ber. The second part requires an essay on “O ur A m erican Her- The Oregon Health Forum will award $500 scholarships to two Oregon high school seniors this spring. The winners will be students whose volunteer ef forts have improved health or awareness about physical, mental or public health issues in their communities. To apply, high school seniors should submit an essay (500 word maximum) outlining their future plans for a career in health care. The essay should address their health-related ac tivities, what those activities have meant to the student and what they have meant to the community. The essay must be accompanied by the student’s name, address and phone number, as well as two letters of reference from the student’s school or a health related orga nization. A pplication deadline is March 15. Scholarships will be awarded in June. Applications must be sent to Oregon Health written under the super vision of a faculty or DAR member; com plet ed within two hours and without reference mate rials. Peura is the daugh ter of Gary and Jamie Peura of Vernonia. She is an active member of three sports teams, band, drama, journal ism and STARS. She is a four-year outdoor school counselor and has held a waitress job for two years. As Asso ciated Student Body president, she is active ly fund-raising for Juve nile Diabetes. She also takes on annual school projects such as the blood drive, food drive, winter festival and other activities. Local youth sports’ programs join Vernonia Boosters A fter much consideraton and follow ing many discu s sions, the Vernonia youth sports programs have decided to join forces with the Vernonia Booster Club in order to maxi mize participation and best pro vide youth programs. Annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled The annual Vernonia Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, March 30 in Hawkins Park. Children will be separated into four age groups, from 0-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-8 years and 9-10 years. Families are ad vised to arrive early, as the ac tion will begin at 10 a.m., sharp, and latecomers will lose out. Following the hunt, the East er Bunny will be at the Scout Cabin with a bag of treats for each child. Anyone who would like to be come involved or learn more about the Vernonia Booster Club / Youth Sports Programs is urged to attend the next Booster Club meeting. It will be held on Wednesday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Vernonia City Hall. Election of officers for the upcoming year will be held.
