Newspaper Page TextPage 16 The INDEPENDENT, February 20, 2002 Obituary GEORGE HOWELL George Howell, 40, Hillsboro, died February 5, 2002. Funeral services were held February 9 at Bronleewe- Bass Funeral Home. Interment was in Fir Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Howell was born June 16, 1961, in Portland, to Gilbert George and Su- sanne Wells Howell Sr. He grew up in Scholls. He served in the U. S. Military. He did glass work for Tom Benson Industries and worked at North Plains Arco. He attended West Coast Heavy Equipment School and worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include a daughter, Leia Howell-Blomberg of Forest Grove; his father of Hillsboro; two brothers, Bill of Newberg, and Rick of Banks; nieces and nephews. Bronlewee-Bass Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. BOBBY G. JOHNSON Bobby Gene Johnson, 53, Cor nelius, died February 6, 2002. A cele bration of life service was held Febru ary 9 at Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with Pastor James T. Simmons, of Singing Hills Christian Church in Hillsboro, officiat ing. Interment was private. Mr. Johnson was born February 28, 1948, in Idabel, Okla., to Robert and Betty Travis Johnson. He grew up in Crescent City, California. In 1967, he married Sheri K. Mur phy. They lived in Crescent City and moved to North Plains in 1970. They later divorced. In 1993, he married Rebecca J. Hendrickson. They lived in Hillsboro and moved to Cornelius in 1994. Mr. Johnson worked for Hoody Cor poration in Beaverton for 22 years as a truck driver, and for Excel Corporation, an automotive parts company in Beaverton. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Laura P. Larsen and Jen nifer J. Fraser, both of Hillsboro, and Jennifer R. Hendrickson of Timber; a son, Rusty D. Hendrickson of Timber; seven grandchildren; his parents of Crescent City; two brothers, Ed of Port land, and Travis of Crescent City; a sis ter, Patricia Harrison of Willitts, Califor nia; several nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foun dation, 1121 SW Salmon, Suite 201, Portland, OR 97205-2021. Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. MARY V. SMITH Mary Verda Smith, 88, Vernonia, died February 10, 2002. Funeral ser vices were held February 15 at the Gales Creek Church of God, with Pas tor Rich LaMar, officiating. Interment was at Gales Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born September 21, 1913, in Salem, to John White and Ma bel Lottie Riggs Allen. She grew up in Portland. In 1930, she married Roscoe Kelly Smith. They lived in Vernonia for 10 years and in Sweet Home for 11 years. They moved to Fortuna, Calif., and re turned to Portland in 1956. They owned and operated Western Auto in the Big Dollar Shopping Center in Portland, then returned to Vernonia and owned and operated Western Auto. She was a telephone operator for Linn County Telephone Company in Sweet Home and for General Tele phone in Forest Grove, Cornelius and Beaverton, until 1975, when she re tired. She was a member of the Ver nonia Evangelical Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband in 1968. Survivors include a son, Marvin R. of Portland; a sister, Barbara M. Casci- ato of Portland; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. OLIVE H. DETHLEFS Olive Hettie Dethlefs, 88, Forest Grove, died February 10, 2002. Private interment was held. Mrs. Dethlefs was born October 5, 1913, in Hillsboro, to Henry and Daisy Matteson Scott. She grew up in Scog gins Valley and graduated from Gaston High School. In 1936, she married Harvey T. Dethlefs. They lived in Scoggins Valley Junction until the mid-1970’s, when they moved to Forest Grove. She was a waitress and bartender for several years. She worked at the Alpine Inn at Scoggins Valley Junction and the Somewhere Cafe in Cornelius. She worked for Tektronix in Beaverton in the parts/packaging department until she retired. Mrs. Dethlefs was a member of the Gaston Community Club. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charley and Hiram; and a sis ter, Helen Gossett. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Harve R. of Vernonia, and Dou glas A. of Cornelius; a daughter, Sharon K. Koberstein of North Bend; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchil dren; nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to the American Heart Association, Ore gon Affiliate, Inc., 1425 NE Irving Street, Suite 100, Portland, Oregon 97232-4201. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ARTHUR M. OVESEN Arthur Marshall Ovesen, 74, died February 5, 2002. A memorial service was held February 8 in Grace Lutheran Church in Scappoose. Mr. Ovesen was born January 28, 1928, in Portland. He graduated from Vernonia High School and served in the U S. Army during the Korean War. He was a tile driller for Kaiser Gypsum (lat er Owens Corning) from 1959 to 1983. He was a forklift driver for Steinfeld’s pickle company and retired in 1993. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and served as its treasurer. In 1955, he married Nellie Helen Cacka. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary LaBrasseur and Julie Smith; a son, Paul A.; nine grandchil dren; four great-grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to Scappoose Community Swim Council through Washington Mutual Bank. Columbia Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ELLANOR G. PARIS Ellanor G. Paris, 88, died February 3, 2002. A funeral was held February 8 in Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove. Mrs. Paris was born July 14, 1913, in Vernonia. Her maiden name was Trageser. She was raised in Portland. She graduated from Parkrose High School. In 1948, she moved to Forest Grove. She was a foster mother for more than 1,000 children and later sold Avon products. She retired in 2001. In 1945, she married Adam S. Paris. She was preceded in death by her hus band in 1994. Survivors include two sons, Thomas and Richard; a daughter, Linda Arnold; three grandchildren; five great-grand children. Remembrances are suggested to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove. Com mittal was at Granite Hill Cemetery Mr. Hanzal was born June 8, 1950, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Southern California. He moved to Vernonia in 1983 and to Grants Pass in 2001. He was a sewing machine tech nician, wrote magazine articles and tied fishing flies. He was a life member of the Nation al Rifle Association and a volunteer with the Vernonia Senior Center. Survivors include his mother, Mary J. Hanzal of Grants Pass; three sisters, Mary Frances Morris of Grants Pass, Lori-Ann Vander Woude of Valley Cen ter, Calif., and Dixie Green of Newhall, Calif.; nieces and nephews. The Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. EBEN L. JOHN Eben Lee John, 94, Milwaukie, died February 12, 2002. A memorial service was held at Stehn’s Family Mortuary in Milwaukie on February 16. Mr. John was born November 28, 1907, in Vernonia, to Milton and Minnie Balay John. He grew up in Vernonia. In 1934, he married Norma Ander son. He worked in the tiimber industry as a logger. He helped build many of the railroad trestles in the Tillamook Burn area. Many of these trestles are still standing today. In 1942, he moved to Washington and then to Portland. He worked for General Electric Company until retiring in 1971. He lived in Hawaii from 1971 to 1979 and moved to "A Trusted l^ame in fu n e ra l Service" McMinnville in 1984. In the mid-1990s, he moved to Milwaukie. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Donna Ingram of Oregon City, and Lea Wells of Milwaukie; a sis ter, Eula Bishop of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren. Macy & Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville was in charge of arrange ments. TRACY G. VANDEHEY Tracy Geraldanhe Vandehey, 35, Chehalis, Washington, died February 12, 2002. A funeral mass was held Feb. 18 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in North Plains, with Fr. Scott Vandehey, celebrant. Private cremation rites were held. Ms. Vandehey was born August 24, 1966, in Portland, to Omer and Evelyn L. Turner Vandehey. She grew up in Banks and attended school in Manning and Buxton. In 2000, she married Jamison Davis. They lived in Fargo, No. Dak., until they moved to Chehalis last fall. She worked for Telecom Inc. in North Dakota, and at the Beaverton and Hills boro DEQ offices. She was preceded in death by her mother; and her brother, Brian. Survivors include her husband; her father of Banks; two brothers, Danny of Rainier, Wash., and Barry of Banks; a sister, Cindy of Hillsboro; nieces and nephews.
