The Vernonia Police Depart ment has recently received a number of complaints regard ing mail theft from residential neighborhoods. Mail theft is a Class A Misdemeanor crime in Oregon. To help deter mail theft, the VPD encourages residents to remove mail from their boxes daily. Mail thieves generally are looking for payroll or govern ment issued checks, credit cards and personal checks. When ordering replacement checks for checking accounts, obtain permission to have the checks delivered to your bank or credit union rather than to your home. Also, if you see a person you don’t recognize removing mail from a neighbor's mailbox, call the police at once.
