Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, February 20, 2002 County Health Partnership receives award for innovative program The C olum bia C ounty Health Partnership was pre sented the “Most Innovative Program Award” at the annual conference of the Special Dis tricts A ssociation of O regon (SDAO), in Seaside on Feb. 9. Receiving the award were Carolyn Keasey of Vernonia, co-chair of the Health Partner ship, and Paula Becks, chair of the Columbia Health District. The Health Partnership is a health-planning project in Co lumbia County in which the community sets priorities for lo cal health needs. It is a county wide coalition that has en hanced com m unity involve ment and decision-making. The Health Partnership is funded through grants from the Northwest Oregon Economic Alliance and the Office of Rural Health, and with funding from the Port of St. Helens. Colum bia Health District is the project sponsor. Pam Rahn, coordinator of the Columbia County Health Partnership, said that she has worked with citizens in every Columbia County community to gather information on issues of health resources, health prob lems, economic impacts, vital statistics and projections, as well as community members' opinions on these issues. The Partnership is studying the feasibility of a Critical Ac cess Hospital and will make recommendations to the Co lumbia Health District. More than 350 hours has been volunteered to the project over the past eight months, Lu- anne Richey of SDAO noted. “Congratulations on a meaning ful project,” Richey added. SDAO awards are present ed annually to a special district with an innovative program that is a significant benefit to the community and can also be adopted by other districts. There are over 750 special dis tricts in the association. United Way recognition banquet United W ay of Colum bia County announced at its Cam paign Celebration and Volun teer Recognition Banquet, that the total raised in the 2001/ 2002 Campaign was $357,505. The goal set for the campaign was $352,000, five percent more than the total raised last year. Campaign Co-Chairs Rick Bigelow and Tony Hyde ex pressed gratitude for the com m unity’s generous response during a difficult economy. “We would like to thank everyone for making this anoth er great cam paign,” said Exec utive D irector Kathye Beck. ‘T h is represents a lot of hard work and dedication by our vol unteers.” St. Helens High School Jazz Band provided music prior to the awards ceremony. Refresh ments and door prizes were do nated by businesses and indi viduals from the community.
