More than $300,000 in grants has made it possible for the City of Vernonia to replace the 15 old RV hookups with 19 new ones, complete with water, sewer, electricity, telephone and cable TV. Additional improvements include new restrooms with showers, all handicapped acces sible, and a new, covered picnic shelter. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to cele brate completion of the park improvements and publicly thank the agencies that provided funding, will be held Friday, Aug. 3, at 1:30 p.m. Elephant Garlic Festival prepares for another year of stinky fun FUN STINKS! Again. Garlic chips, garlic ice cream, garlic sausages, garlic pizza and gar lic corn-on-the-cob. These deli cacies are among the many reeking food dishes at the World’s Fourth Annual Ele phant Garlic Festival, August 17-19, in North Plains. The am ple food offerings can be washed down with garlic lemonade, garlic lattes, garlic beer and even garlic wine. Ad mission is free to all festival events. And, if you have a physique which most closely resembles the herb for which the festival is named, then you’ll be poised to win the coveted title of Mr. or Ms. Elephant Garlic 2001! The festival opens at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, and will run until 6:00 p.m. on Sun day, August 19. A Grand Festi val Parade, continuous enter tainment for all ages, including live music and puppet shows from two stages, a car show, arts and crafts, pony rides and Boating safety starts with the owner and operator Summertime is here, which means that about 17 million boats are hitting the water. Boating is a terrific family activ ity and is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreations in America. While safety advancements are continuously being devel oped, nothing can replace common sense and good judg ment on the part of boaters. No one should take the helm of a boat without boating education. Remember to use these safety guidelines: Boat owners: 1. Enter the parking garage from SE Eighth Avenue between Baseline and Oak. More children in the U.S. die from traffic accidents than from any other cause. Six out of 10 of these children die unre strained in the vehicle. Tragi cally, nearly half of them would survive if they were restrained properly. Yet, even when child seats are used, about 85 percent of them are installed incorrectly, most often with multiple instal lation errors that actually can cel the injury-prevention ad vantages of safety seats. If you transport children in your vehicle, take time to drive through the safety clinic in spection area. It will take just a few minutes for a certified tech nician to check the safety seat(s) in your vehicle, confirm how to install an infant seat se curely, the way to use locking clips properly and when it is safe to switch to an appropriate booster seat as children grow. The clinic is free and no reg istration is required. Sustainable Forestry is topic for Upper Nehalem Watershed Council The next meeting of the Up per Nehalem Watershed Coun cil will feature a presentation on “Sustainable Forestry” by Charles Laird, a University of Washington professor and small woodland operator in the Vernonia area. The meeting will be July 26, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Mist-Birken- feld Fire Hall, 12525 Hwy. 202. Check the weather fore cast before you go. 3. Know and watch your boat’s passenger capacity. 4. Maintain enough life jack ets and personal flotation de vices in the right sizes for everyone on board. Make sure everyone wears them. 5. Understand and follow federal and local boating rules and regulations. The U.S. Coast Guard offers refresher courses. 6. Don’t drink and drive, and don’t allow anyone who has been drinking to drive your boat. 7. Be courteous of other boats and personal watercraft. Passengers: 1. Wear a life jacket that fits properly and make sure your children do, too. 2. Listen to and respect the captain of the boat. 3. Do not distract the driver or allow your children to do so. 4. Do not insist that boat owners let you drive, especially if you have been drinking.
