Page 8 The INDEPENDENT, July 5, 2001 Erica Hobart awarded scholarship by Multiple Sclerosis Society Erica Hobart of Vernonia is one of four students recently awarded a onetime, $500 col lege scholarship from the Na tional MS Society, Oregon Chapter. Hobart is the daughter of Cindy Smejkal of Vernonia and Rick Hobart of Mist; she gradu ated from Vernonia High School in 2000. She attended Clackamas Community Col lege last year and plans to re turn there in the fall to complete her Oregon Associate Transfer degree, then go on to study dentistry. Scholarship applicants were asked to submit essays on the subject, “What multiple sclero sis has meant to me and my family.” The essays were re viewed by a panel of National MS Society staff members and volunteers. that would help her mother. In her essay, Hobart wrote that while MS has undeniably presented many obstacles for her family, it has also influ enced her in some positive ways. For example, Hobart chose to do her high school senior project on reflexology, as she had heard that this form of massage therapy sometimes helpes ease symptoms caused by MS. She spent many hours with massage therapist Marie Krahn of Vernonia, learning techniques that might help her mother. As a result, Hobart earned an award for most out standing senior project and be came interested in pursuing a degree in the health sciences. In addition, what has been most important to her is that she felt she learned a new skill “...I feel I played an impor tant part in the recovery my mom has made," Hobart wrote.
