Honored as Citizens of the Year for their many volunteer efforts in the community are Don and Deloris (DeDe) Webb. Peterson House Museum open The Peterson House Muse um, on Nehalem Hwy. N. at Natal, will be open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Satur- day, August 3 and 4, during Jamboree. There is no charge to enjoy this privately owned museum. Johnny Limbo & group will perform Johnny Limbo & The Lugnuts will present their sec ond rocking Jamboree Concert at Cedar Ridge Sports Camp from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 4. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. In addition to great musical entertainment, there will danc ing, food, volleyball, children’s play area, swimming and a beer garden. Admission for 6 and under is free, 7-12, $4.00 and 13 and over, $7.00. For more information, see the web: visitcedarridge.com Vernonia history books available “Vernonia, A Pocket In The Woods”, a book about Vernon ia history by Ann Fulton, PhD, will be available at the Vernon ia Pride booth in downtown Vernonia during Jamboree. After having served as a vol unteer firefighter for about 40 years, Don now serves on the board of directors of the Ver nonia Rural Fire Protection District. A long-time member of the Izaak Walton League, Don also works hard to maintain a healthy and “user friendly” Ver nonia Lake and was greatly re sponsible for the installation of the handicapped-accessible fishing piers. Now he is in volved in the development of the primitive camping area at the lake. Don also volunteers his ef forts in many other ways and was one of a dedicated few people who worked every weekend for a year on the Scout Cabin. And, of course, you’ll find him helping kids at the Jamboree Fishing Derby on Friday. Keep Summer Safe - Don't Drink & Drive Don and Deloris Webb, Citizens of the Year. DeDe spends just as much time volunteering, although of ten in ways that aren’t as visi ble. For instance, someone had to provide sustenance for those Scout Cabin volunteers - so you know who was there every weekend keeping them well fed. Don and DeDe Webb may be citizens of the century, not just the year! Watermelon toss after the parade How far can a machine— without explosives—toss a wa termelon? You can find out at the Wa termelon Fling after the parade on Saturday, when watermel ons weighing between 8 and 10 pounds will be placed, one at a time, in a “sling” of the tre- buchet variety, which will fling them from 250 to 350 feet. After a few test launches are held, three watermelons will be flung and the distance to each measured, in order to obtain an average Fling. Guesses on the average Fling will be sold for $1 each, in increments of 2 inches, or you can purchase a foot for $5. A healthy cash prize will be awarded to the person whose guess is closest to the average without going over. Tickets may be purchased at the American Family Insurance booth, in front of the school district of fice, Friday afternoon and Sat urday before the parade, as well as at the Fling. The trebuchet will be in the Jamboree parade, with the Daybreak Rotary Club of For est Grove promoting its Punkin Chunkin Festival in North Plains at the end of September. The Watermelon Fling will be held behind the library along the old railroad grade. It is a fund raiser for the Vernonia Area Chamber of Commerce and the Daybreak Rotary Club of Forest Grove.
