Pacj. 16 The INDEPENDENT, June 20, 2001 Jewell youth honored by Clatsop County children’s commission Bow ie Thom as H aw ks, a 2001 graduate of Jewell High School, was honored by the C latsop C ounty C om m ission on Children and Familes with a Youth Recognition Award, June 6 in Seaside. He was one of six area teenagers honored. Hawks intends to study fire social challenges, said teacher Jim W ilkin, w ho nom inated him, and is em pathetic of oth ers’ difficulties and is willing to give needed help. W ilkin said he knew of kids who would not be in school tod ay w ithout Hawks’ help and example. There was no father present science and EMT training at C latsop C om m unity C ollege and becom e a firefighter and em ergency medical technician. He is currently a volunteer with the Elsie-Vinem aple Fire De partment. As a child, Hawks had low self-esteem and was picked on by other kids, according to Wilkin, and rather than bully them back Mortar Board honors to Elizabeth Johnson Elizabeth Virginia Johnson, of Vernonia, a junior education al studies major, is one of fifty University of Oregon students selected for m em bership in Mortar Board, a national honor society for seniors. Mortar Board members are selected for contributions made to the university com m unity in the areas of leadership, schol arship and service. The univer sity’s Scroll and Scribe chapter of Mortar Board was chartered in 1921. Traditional Mortar Board ac tivities include selecting Pro fessor of the Month recipients, hosting the Ju n io r S chola r Awards, coordinating the pro duction of the annual Mortar Board planner and co-sponsor ing U niversity Day cam pus clean-up events. fellow students and the school staff.
