The INDEPENDENT, May 2, 2001 Page 9 VHS Equestrian drill team members qualify for state in first year Vernonia High School Equestrian Drill Team mem bers Sarah Sook, Jessica Alli son, Kendall Nelson and Liz James finished first in the NW District and will be competing at the state competition May 18 -20 at the Jackson County Expo Center in Central Point. Also qualifying for State in individual events were Kendell Nelson, who placed third at the District level in Canadian Flags, and Jessica Allison, who tied for second at the District level in Figure 8, placed fifth in Pole Bending and tied for sixth place in Barrels. The team will have a car wash on May 5 at the Vernonia School District office from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to help cover costs of travelling to State. The first scheduled will be an aluminum can drive by the Jr. Midgets on Saturday, May 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Players will be going door to door, or cans may be dropped off at Vernon ia High School.
