Page 8 The INDEPENDENT, May 2, 2001 Special showing for Ring of Fire on 40th anniversary of premier By Robb Wilson As most of you know, one of my most favorite subjects is the movie “Ring of Fire,” which was filmed partially in Vernonia in 1960. Throughout the past few years in this column, I have given accounts of the movie and details of the filming. If you missed those, I suppose you will get a second chance. Also, in Ethel Blackburn’s “Bit of His tory” series, she gives a good presentation about it. Let me get back to the sub ject at hand. In May of 1961, the movie was out of the can, off the floor and ready to hit the theatres! Beside the excitement creat ed by the presence of the ac tors and film crew here in 1960, some of the actors and the pro ducers, Virginia and Andrew Stone, all came back for the premier. As they entered town, there was a big banner over the roadway saying “Welcome back to Vernonia!” They also passed through the flaming “Ring of Fire", the same one that was used in the filming of the movie’s title page. After a greeting and procla mation from Mayor George Johnson, a big entourage of townspeople put the Stones and actors David Janssen and Joyce Taylor into convertibles and drove them through town like they were royalty! The pa rade took them to the First Christian Church, where the ladies fixed and served a big dinner. Then, off they went to the Joy Theatre, where the WOEC golf tourney to aid energy users Road, Vernonia. The Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court represents Columbia County throughout the northwest, appearing in pa rades, rodeos, luncheons and other promotional activities. All applicants must be unmarried, P rovidence and PCC team up for health education Nursing students at Portland Community College are getting an opportunity for early expo sure to computer-based clinical documentation, as a result of a unique partnership with Provi dence Health System. Each term, PCC nursing students gain practical experience through on-site work at various hospitals. At Providence Portland Medical Center, students learn to use the hospital’s computer- based documentation to chart the patient care they deliver. To help students better prepare for this migration from paper to computer, Providence Health System’s Regional Information Services department has pro vided a secure connection from the hospital computer system to the nursing computer lab at PCC. Students receive significant value from the pioneering rela tionship according to Maurge Kock, PCC nursing instructor. “Having the computers at school allows flexibility in scheduling orientation with stu dents. We can take as much time as needed, and even re visit some areas. The support from Providence has been wonderful,” Kock said. PCC faculty log on to the Providence system through the Internet and must provide sev eral levels of authentication be fore being granted access to the practice charting system. At no time can faculty or students access or chart information on real patients in the instructional lab setting. with no children, must be will ing to abide by the Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court rules, be available to partici pate in court activities through out the season and be respon sible for their own horse and transportation. Application deadline is July 16, 2001. Horsemanship pat tern, speech requirements and pageant schedule will be mailed upon receipt of applica tion. Tryouts for the 2002 court will be held during the Colum bia County Fair and Rodeo, Friday, July 20 through Sun day, July 22, 2001. Tryouts will include horsemanship, speech, impromptu questions, personal interview and presentation run at both rodeo performances. The 2002 court will begin their reign in January 2002 with for mal coronation. The theatre sold out all 583 seats, as everyone wanted to view the movie that made the then-dying town of Vernon ia “famous”! It’s been 40 years since that Hollywood-type event. Many of you were not present then and have never seen the movie. Well, here’s your chance; I have a good copy of the film and will be showing it to cele brate the 40th anniversary of the World Premier of “Ring of Fire”. So, I invite everyone to come down to the Vernonia Community Church on State Avenue on Friday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. for a special showing on their large screen television. Be sure to enter from the gym door on A Street near the rear of the building for this, once again, GALA presentation. Bring a pillow for the kids to throw on the floor. Popcorn and pop will be at 1960 prices! All of those who were in the film as extras are invited to bring along memorabilia for a show and tell. This will be a fun evening for one and all!
