Friends of the Scout Cabin celebrates first full year of operation Shirlee Daughtry presented Tom Holce with a plaque for his generous donation toward the rehabilitation of the Scout Cabin. Holce grew up in Mist and Vernonia, and belonged to a Boy Scout troop that met in the cabin. After more than a year of planning, a full year of con struction time, and another year of actual operations, Friends of the Scout Cabin took time out for a well-de served celebration. The Janu ary 27 celebration of the reno vated cabin’s first anniversary was held, of course, in the Scout Cabin. Shirlee Daughtry, president of the Friends of the Scout Cabin, spoke briefly about the difficulty of organizing the proj ect, and the pleasure of seeing it start to fulfill the group’s goal of increasing use of the build ing by youth groups, without any fees, while operating costs are being derived from rental fees for other functions. Special recognition went to Tom Holce, Don McLean and Norm Brown, but Daughtry made it abundantly clear that there were too many volun- teers - businesses, unions and individuals - to name. A sur prised Daughtry was also the recipient of special mention, from other members of the Friends group. There were a few other speakers, including Jim Tier ney, Tony Hyde, Synda Allen, Corey Colburn and Noni An dersen, but the speeches were brief and heartfelt. The pur pose of the day was to enjoy the accomplishment. Hundreds of people were in volved in one way or another, in the all-volunteer fund raising and construction effort. Though fund raising barely reached $100,000, the building has been appraised in the $300,000 range. It is owned and operated by the Friends of the Scout Cabin on property leased from the City of Vernon ia in Hawkins Park. Time to make nominations for My Fair Lady Pageant The My Fair Lady Pageant is accepting nominations for the 2001 My Fair Lady Court. The pageant is held each year during the Columbia County Fair to recognize senior women for their outstanding service in our community. Each senior cit izens’ center in the county se lects a woman to represent them in the pageant. Don and his wife, Donna, owned and operated Rising River Adult Foster Care in Vernonia. Don, a civic-minded citizen with administrative abilities, Juanita J. Johnson Army Pfc. Juanita J. John ston is now stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tam pa, Florida. Johnson, a software analyst with the U.S. Central Com mand, is the daughter of Mar ion G. and Linda W. Johnston of Vernonia. She is a 1997 graduate of Portland Commu nity College. of Senior Day activities at the Columbia County Fair. A panel of judges will select a queen by rating the women on communi ty service, appearance and their responses to questions asked during the pageant. Annual quilt show at Warren church Bethany Lutheran Church will hold their 20th annual Quilt Show on Friday, Feb. 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Old and new quilts will be on display. There will be a raffle, silent auction and quilts will be for sale. Lunch will be served both days from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and a pancake breakfast will be served Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Bethany Lutheran Church is an historic country church lo cated at 34721 Church Road in Warren. More than 100 people attended the February 1 ban quet honoring the efforts of vol unteers. The St. Helens High School Jazz Band provided pre-dinner entedainment and plaques were awarded in recognition of outstanding campaign achievements.
