JOHNSTON Deborah Ann Johnston, 48, Birken- feld, died October 6, 2000. Recitation of the Rosary was October 10. A memorial mass was held October 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia, with the Rev. Ronald Millican of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Mill, celebrant. Private Interment was held. Mrs. Johnston was born March 3, 1952, in Vernonia, to Robert and Betty J. (Froman) Curl. She attended school in Vernonia, graduating from Vernonia High School in 1970. She graduated Cum Laude from Southern Oregon State College, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Business Education. She married Alan E. Johnston in 1974 and they made their home in Birkenfeld. She taught Business at Clatskanie High School from 1974 to 1980. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church in Birkenfeld and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia, where she was Director of Religious Educa tion for several years. She was cur rently serving her second term as a Vernonia School Board member. Survivors include her husband, three sons, Aaron M, of Portland; Paul M. and Kevin T., both of Birkenfeld; her parents, Robert F. and Betty J. Curl of Vernonia; six brothers, Joe and Steve of Hillsboro; Rick of Rock Creek; Pat of Louisville, Kentucky; Jeff and Doug of Portland; two sisters, Becky Walton of Camas, Wash., and Angela Hering of Brownsbury, Ind.; 29 nieces and nephews. Private crema tion has been held. Mr. Chapel was born October 9, 1948, in Portland to Donald and Frances (Frazee) Chapel. He attended school in Vancouver, Wash., and grad uated from Monroe High School in Monroe, Wash.. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. The former Vernonia resident mar ried Patsy McConnel in 1986 and they made their home in Goldendale, Wash. He was a member of Vietnam Vet erans of America Hall-Howell Chapter #512 of Vancouver. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Donna Bradley of Ocean Park, Wash, Marijane Patrizio of Greenville, S.C., and Amy Wood of Portland; a son, Robert McConnell of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren. Funeral Services were held October 11 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with the Reverend C. Eugene Sabin, pastor of First Christian Church in For est Grove, officiating. Private Inurn ment followed at the family plot at Longview (Wash.) Memorial Park. Mrs. Norby was born May 2, 1937, in Otis, to Charles W. and Bertha Pearl Elizabeth (Cunningham) Jackson. She attended school in Hoquiam and Ab erdeen, Washington. She married Buz Norby in 1960. They lived in Oregon until 1979, when they were divorced. She returned to Vernonia in 1999. She worked for Gray & Company in Forest Grove for 25 years until retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde. She was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Spreadborough; a step sister, Vicki Norby; and a brother, Char lie Jackson Wright. Survivors include her companion since 1985, Curt Davis of Vernonia; two sons, Alan D. of Forest Grove and Steve H. of Vernonia; a step-son, Bruce D., two brothers, David Cham bers and Robert Jackson, both of Port land; four sisters, Charlotte O’Berg of Gaston, Jessie of Longview, Wash., Joyce Rutherford of Reno, Nev., and Joann Hadley of Dallas; four grandchil dren; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Richardson was the last of nine children of one of the original Birkenfeld families in the Nehalem Val ley. She was born May 16, 1901, on Deep Creek, to Anton and Juliana (Kruse) Birkenfeld. Her parents came from Germany to Pennsylvania in 1880 and homesteaded in the Nehalem Val ley around 1885. In 1913, the family moved to the area that is now the town of Birkenfeld, where her father built a house, a mill, a store and a hotel. In 1919, she married Leonard J. Richardson. They lived in Birkenfeld and Elsie until his death in 1943. She lived in Seaside for 30 years until she moved to Longview in 1993. Mrs. Richardson was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Clatskanie. Survivors include a daughter, Marie Bellingham of Birkenfeld; three grand sons, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, George Richardson, two sisters, Julia Vadnais and Mary Williams; and six brothers, Anton, Bill, August, Frank, Louis and Edward Birkenfeld. • Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary of Clatskanie was in charge of arrange ments. THOMAS C. GRAVES Thomas Crawford Graves, 89, For est Grove, died October 14, 2000. Fu neral services were held October 17, with Pastor Dave Giles of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Forest Qrove, officiating. Concluding rites and inter ment were at Crescent Grove Ceme tery in Tigard. Mr. Graves was born February 12, 1911, in Hoquiam, Wash., to Wilbur T. and Mabel (Crawford) Graves. The family moved to Oregon, where he at tended school in Sheridan, Monmouth, Portland and Vernonia. He graduated from Vernonia High School in 1929. He married Millicent M. Driver Stiefer in 1998 and they lived in Ver nonia until 2000, when they moved to Forest Grove. As a teenager, Mr. Graves operated the monorail for the Oregon-American Lumber Company in Vernonia. During World War II, he worked for Kaiser Shipyards constructing Navy escort aircraft carriers. Later, he worked for Willamette Tug and Barge Company. He worked as a dredge captain for thir ty-five years, until he retired. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #701. He served as President of the National Steam Asso ciation and was a member of the Steam Fiends, an organization of steam vessel owners and operators. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Forest Grove. Survivors include his wife; a daugh ter, Victoria Freeman of McNeal, Ari zona; two sons, Edwin T. of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Reginold H. of Hills boro; three step-daughters, Mary Smith of Scappoose, Linda Trout of North Plains and Cathi Graves of McEwen, Tenn.; three step-sons, Charles Iron of Klamath Falls, Daniel Hunnicut of Nashville, Tenn., and James Stiefer of Canby; a brother, Hale of Hillsboro; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many step grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
