Librarian — Take charge of Auction to benefit Vernonia Cares A fundraising auction for Vernonia Cares will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, at 627 Adams Avenue. Viewing will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the auction to follow at 7:00 p.m. Community members are invit ed to donate or consign items to be auactioned. Consign ments must be registered by 6:00 p.m. Aug. 26. A 20-per- cent commission on consign ments will benefit Vernonia Cares. All proceeds from the auction will go toward food pur chases and holiday food bas kets. Donations will be accepted on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at 627 Adams Ave. If you are not available during Vernonia Cares open times, or cannot deliver, call Lisa Edgar at 429- 4103, or Kelley Murphy-Shaw at 429-7026, to make arrange ments for pick up. Register now for second annual Vernonia Community Yard Sale The second annual Vernon ia Community Yard and Side walk Sale is coming! This year the sale will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Those interested in partici pating may sign up by calling Helen Bateman at Vernonia Realty, 429-6203, with your name, address and phone number, by Sept. 4. A city map, marked with all homes and businesses partici pating in the sale will be pro vided to shoppers. A blanket garage sale permit will be issued by the City of Vernonia City for all partici pants listed in the application. The Garage Sale flyer/permits can be picked up at Vernonia Realty & Insurance Center dur ing normal business hours from Sept. 8 through Sept. 15. Poetry contest seeking entrants The International Library of Poetry has announced that $58,000 in prizes will be awarded this year in the Inter national Open Poetry Contest. Poets from all areas, particular ly beginners are urged to try winning a share of over 250 prizes. The deadline for the contest is Nov. 30. The contest is open to everyone and the entry is free. “Any poet, whether previ ously published or not, can be a winner," said Fran Campos, Contest Director. “When peo ple learn about our free poetry contest, they suddenly realize that their own poetic works can win cash prizes, as well as gain national recognition. These are in addition to requirements for im munization against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, mumps and rubella. Students will also be re quired to provide documenta tion of chickenpox vaccination, or that they have had the dis ease. “Children who do not have the required documentation on file at their school risk being ex cluded from school this winter,” said Amanda Timmons, public health educator at the Oregon Health Division.
