It’s an open gym type situ ation,” said Parker. The sessions will be struc tured, and kids are expected to participate according to the di rection of the coaches. There will be seating and parents are welcome to come observe. According to Parker, “Wrestling is like a family. I’m sure down the line we’ll need help with transportation and the like. I’m excited about the opportunity this provides for our wrestling programs." With new direction and long term plans, a develop mental wrestling program is back in Vernonia. Under the di rection of coach Chris Barnes, practices will be held Wednes days and Thursdays in July, and Mondays and Tuesdays in August from 6-7:30 P.M. in the VHS gym for any interested student in 6th through 12th grades. Everyone is welcome. Sessions will cover the ba sics of takedowns, defense, and pinning, as well as stretch ing and conditioning. Live wrestling will be held to a mini mum until a wrestler shows proficiency, according to Barnes. “When I coached the high school team this year, I saw a real need to get a youth pro gram established so our varsity could be even better. We rely on our freshman and sopho mores. We will likely become USA wrestling affiliated and the kids will have a chance to com pete in league matches this fall,” Barnes said.
