give kids something to do this
summer, “ says Parker. “The
school district is just being
great helping us get this
rolling.”
Parents will need to accom
pany their children to their first
session and sign a permission
slip. “If you can’t make it to all
the sessions, come when you
can. It’s an open gym type situ
ation,” said Parker.
The sessions will be struc
tured, and kids are expected to
participate according to the di
rection of the coaches. There
will be seating and parents are
welcome to come observe.
According
to
Parker,
“Wrestling is like a family. I’m
sure down the line we’ll need
help with transportation and
the like. I’m excited about the
opportunity this provides for
our wrestling programs."

Vernonia Youth Wrestling is
back! With new direction and
long term plans, a develop
mental wrestling program is
back in Vernonia. Under the di
rection of coach Chris Barnes,
practices will be held Wednes
days and Thursdays in July,
and Mondays and Tuesdays in
August from 6-7:30 P.M. in the
VHS gym for any interested
student in 6th through 12th
grades. Everyone is welcome.
Sessions will cover the ba
sics of takedowns, defense,
and pinning, as well as stretch
ing and conditioning. Live
wrestling will be held to a mini
mum until a wrestler shows
proficiency,
according
to
Barnes.
“When I coached the high
school team this year, I saw a
real need to get a youth pro
gram established so our varsity
could be even better. We rely
on our freshman and sopho
mores. We will likely become
USA wrestling affiliated and the
kids will have a chance to com
pete in league matches this
fall,” Barnes said.
Barnes will be assisted by
high school coaches Jeff Park
er and James Brookins, as well
as by members of the high
school team.
