S., Vernonia 429-7581 ■■-■■■■ 324-2071 The Vernonia Police Depart ment will be enforcing City Or dinance 745 which will prohibit the operation of bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, or similar devices on sidewalks along Bridge Street, between Weed Avenue and California Avenue. Officers have been giving warnings to people violating the ordinance since it went into effect on May 16. Citations will now be issued to violators. A maximum fine of $50 may be imposed. Parents who authorize or permit their children to violate this city ordinance may be cited town unrecorded, arraigned on contempt of court for FTA; to report back June 28 with copy of can celled check. Vernonia Police Chief Jim Walters encourages par ents to talk to their children and make sure they understand this ordinance and the conse quences of violating it. The ordinance specifies that no one shall ride, operate or use bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, or similar devices on sidewalks along Bridge Street between Weed Avenue and California Avenue, or on Madi son and Jefferson Avenues be tween Bridge Street and Maple- Other elements of the ordi nance require people riding, operating or using a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, roller skates, roller blades or similar devices on any other sidewalk, to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, slow down and give audible signals before overtaking and passing pedes trians.
