Page 8 The INDEPENDENT, June 7, 2000 Many students honored at Vernonia Principal’s Awards assembly The Vernonia High School Principal’s Awards Assembly was held June 1, in the VHS gymnasium. Awards in each subject were handed out, as well as a few special ones. The OASSA Honor Team awards were presented by Principal Mike Durbin. These awards went to seniors in a number of subjects. Recipients of the OSSA Honor Team awards were: Music - Kristin Francis Math - Brian Robertson Language Arts - Kathy Crawford Science - Colin Tierney Vocational Education - Brennen Bernal Spanish - Ani Mllitzer Social Science - Kelly Bas- ka Physical Education - Justin Johnson Fine Arts, Visual - Kathy Crawford Performing Arts - Tabetha Kintz and Kristin Francis Alternative education awards were presented by Hei di Herb. Recipients were: Integrity Award - Jessie Doane Most Improved - Kody Watts Best Attendance - Kody Watts Outstanding Life Skills - Corey Kennedy. Awards for students in the Learning Resource Center were presented by Judi Gwin. Dedication to Academic Achievement - Kelly Baska Improved Self-Growth - Je remiah Haverland Most Persistent - Brian Collins Student Council and Lead ership adviser and English teacher Patty Dickens present ed awards to the Student Council, and the Outstanding Leadership Student awards. Recipients of these awards were: President - Leslie Fi namore Vice President - Steve Pot ter Secretary - Jessica Soder- back Treasurer - Katrina Jeffers Student Body Manager - Lori Dailey Foreign Exchange Repre sentative - Myriam Gendron Public Relations - Andrea Pinedo Fire Marshall - Jake Brock Sergeant at Arms - Jason Busch The Outstanding Leadership Student awards went to Leslie Finamore, Lori Dailey, Andrea Pinedo and Steven Potter. Awards for Computer Appli cations and Personal Finance were presented by computers teacher Joan Mezger. Shawn Hillyer received the award for Computer Applications and Bryan Dinger received the award for Personal Finance. Secretary Jan Bernardi pre sented the Outstanding Office Aide awards to two students, Holly Murphy and Jeremiah Haverland. Librarian Dana Hyde pre sented Media Aide awards to Janet James and Casey Weller. Mathematics teacher Ran dy Shockey presented the In formal Algebra and Geometry awards. Recipients were: Informal Algebra 1 - Jaki King and Aaron Beethe Informal Algebra 2 - Marilyn Schmidlin Geometry - Kayla Hen nessey and Jacob Corey Advanced mathematics teacher Sheri Burleson pre sented the next group of awards in mathematics, as well as Quiz Bowl awards. Recipients of the math awards were: Algebra I - Sarah Johnston Algebra II - Brass Sears and Alex Hayes Pre-Calculus - Matthew Brookins Trigonometry - Elisabeth Brookins McEntire Math Award - Matthew Brookins The Quiz Bowl awards went to participants April Bamburg, Elisabeth Brookins, Matthew Brookins, Cassian Flynn, Blaine Vandehey and Brass Sears. Most Valuable Quiz Bowl Team Member - Brass Sears Teachers James Brookins and Kurt Victor presented the next set of awards in science. Recipients were: Physical Science - Eric Weller Advanced Biology - Elisa beth Brookins and Brass Sears Chemistry - Alex Hayes Biology - Shawn Hillyer Spanish teacher Wil Martir presented the foreign language awards for Spanish I to Elisa beth Brookins and Robert Smith; Spanish II to Janet James. Band and chorus director Bob Isted presented the follow ing awards to music students: Best Director - Brian Ro bertson Most Valuable Band Mem ber - Christy Benes 4-Year Band Member - Bri an Robertson, Arron Forster and Brian Collins John Philip Sousa Award - Blaine Vandehey Yearbook adviser and fresh- man/junior English teacher Jennifer Calvert presented awards for yearbook, Introduc tion to Literature and American Literature. Randee Parker received the award for Yearbook Editor, as well as a new award that will bear her name: the Outstand ing Yearbook Student. Introduction to Literature - Rachael Bentsen American Literature - Elisa beth Brookins Sophomore English teacher Patty Dickens presented the award for Outstanding sopho more in Language Arts to two students, Brass Sears and Melissa Templin Senior English teacher and journalism adviser Ward Nel son presented the Alvilda Hearing English Award, spelling bee awards and two journalism awards. Recipients of these were: Alvilda Hearing English Award - Randee Parker Journalism - Elena Majbova Senior Journalism Award plaque - April Bamburg Columbia County Spelling Bee - 2nd place, April Bam burg; 3rd Place - Charles Gen dron Nelson also presented the Senior Project awards: Best Oral Presentation - Fawn Cecil Best Research Paper - Ele na Majbova Best Physical Project - Jared McWhirter Over-all Best Senior Project Plaque - Erica Hobart Outstanding Senior Project Honorable Mention - Tabetha Kintz, Randee Parker and Brid get Titus Cici Bell presented the Xe rox Award for Humanities to Elisabeth Brookins. Awards for health and phys ical education were presented by instructor Bob Bruce. Recipients of these awards were: Army Reserve, Scholar- Athelete medallions - Matthew Brookins and Casey Weller Mickey Bruer Memorial Golf Award plaque - Brass Sears Brunsman Memorial Award trophy - Elisabeth Brookins Most Inspirational Under classman in sports - Brass Sears Terry Smith Memorial trophy - Bryan Dinger Outstanding Athlete trophy - Blaine Vandehey Principal Durbin presented the Northwest Principal’s Award, a framed certificate and $100 to two seniors, Andrea Pinedo and Brian Robertson Randee Parker was stunned by a trophy in her name that will be awarded yearly to a deserving student on the Memo- log staff. Teacher Jennifer Calvert presented the award to Parker. Clinic set for future cheerleaders The Vernonia High School cheerleaders are again holding summer clinics for young peo ple ages 5-12. The clinics will be on Tuesdays starting June 20th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Anderson Park. The clinics will continue up to Jamboree, at which time the students will participate in the Jamboree parade with the cheerleaders. Cost for the clin ic is $5 per person, with family rates available.
