Several members of Ver nonia Youth in Action! partici pated either by helping with be- The First Annual Columbia County 24-Hour Relay Chal lenge, held Oct. 9 on the Rainier High School track, was a resounding success. Twenty-one teams with over 200 participants, raised more than seven thousand dollars to be used in Columbia County to fight drug and alcohol abuse. Over 200 volunteers from throughout the county made this event possible. Columbia County Commis sioner Tony Hyde’s team from Vernonia was a family affair; his wife, Dana, and daughters, Kirsten and Kortni, met the Re lay Challenge, along with Sher- il McWhirter, her son Jared and hind the scenes functions, or by filling out other teams, in cluding the PGE and Rainier DARE teams. Youth in Action! participants included Tegan Jones, Jason Landers, Kathy Crawford, Tanya Santos, Alexis Posley, Steven Potter and Christie Brown. Vernonia volunteers Cindy Veterans invited to join VFW group Post #5233 meets on the third Thursday of each month at the National Guard Armory in Forest Grove. Dues for the Post are $20.00, and for the Auxiliary $15.00 per year. For the Auxiliary, $5.00 of your dues will purchase a cancer in surance policy. Fifty percent of the money raised in the Challenge will be divided by Columbia County’s five communities for activities M-B sets Fall Festival on Saturday The Mist-Birkenfeld Helping Circle is excited to have five Beany Baby Bears to auction at the Fall Festival on Satur day, October 24. The festival kicks off at 6:00 p.m. in the Mist School gym. Princess Diana, Erin, Peace, Curly, and Valentino Bears have been donated to the auction by Barbara Hodgson, mother of Mist Grade School primary teacher Kari Hansen. Other Fall Festival activities include raffle baskets, door prizes, a silent auction, bake sale, plant sale, and a quilt raf fle. A quilt was donated for the Fall Festival by Mrs. Bruce Eliot of Birkenfeld. The king- size quilt was crafted by the quilters of St. Mary’s Church in Vernonia and raffled at their 1997 Quilt Fair. Mrs. Elliot won the raffle and has generously donated the quilt to the Helping Circle for the club’s annual fund raiser. The Upper Nehalem Dix ieland Band will be there to give a special performance.
