Auaust 7.1996 By Charlene Bechen Banks Library Volunteer Completed reading records for the “Win With Reading” summer reading program may be turned in at the library any time before September 1. All readers (including those in the “Read to Me" program) who achieved their reading goals will receive a book award. August 10 is the next Recycle Saturday at the SWATCO Service Yard (15945 NW Sellers Road). Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many of your neighbors help to staff this worthy activity. There is, however, still a need for more volun teers. If you could commit to a couple hours once a month, or even every other month, it would make a big difference in the success of this program. Please call Donna at 324-3404 for more information. Thanks to passage of the open hours grant portion of the Washington County Library levy last spring, the Banks Library is now able to extend its hours of operation. The previous 22 hours a week has now increased to 30 hours per week. To provide the extra service, we now have a new employee. Please come by and welcome Jane to our staff. New hours are Tuesday and Thursday 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The library is looking for volunteers. Help is needed in many areas, from sorting and shelv ing books to janitorial work. Typing and com puter skills would be helpful, but anyone with an interest in books and time to spare would be most welcome. Please call Denise at 324- 1382 for details. Tuesday, August 13 is the scheduled day for the WILI computer software upgrade. All computers in the Washington County Library system will be down that day. Patrons can still check out books, but searching and reserving functions will not be possible through the com puter. Please remember to bring your library card to make it easier for the staff to assist you. Among other enhancements, the new up grade will enable addition of E-Mail addresses in patrons’ records. Be sure to look for the Friends of the Li brary fund-raising quilt at the Banks Baibecue on August 17 and 18. The drawing for the quilt will be held Sunday afternoon at the barbecue. Tickets are on sale at the library $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Previous quilts have each raised nearly $1,000 for the Friends. The bidding period for the new library has now closed. Watch for announcements regard ing the contract award and details of the ground breaking ceremony. The Banks Library is located at 669 S. Main Street in the Oak Village Shopping Center. Very special young helpers were here To the Editor: A special group of young people from Indiana were in Vernonia recently, spending a very busy week working on homes and the school. They were brought to our commu nity through the efforts of the Church of the Brethren and the Interfaith Disaster Re sponse Team. A tremendous amount of work was accom plished in the short time they were here. We want to thank all of the workers for their ef forts. On behalf of Church of the Brethren and Interfaith Disas te r R elief team s, we also want to thank the churches and individuals who provided evening meals for the group of v o lu n te e rs , who were “camped out” in Washington Grade School. S erving dishes left at W ashington Grade School during this time can now be picked up at the Relief Center at 1010 Bridge (Pihl Logging Building). Hopefully I will be able to te ll of many hookups with the wild De schutes steelhead, which I am told come much more readily to the fly than the hatchery variety. According to my July, 1996, copy of River- keeper, the Deschutes w ild steelhead is threatened by a timber sale in the upper Trout Creek basin where the Prineville Ranger Dis trict of the Ochoco National Forest plans to harvest 35 million board feet of logs on over 5,000 acres of public land. According to Riverkeeper, “Even though this is called a sal vage sale, the majority of the trees to be har vested are live trees. Harvest is also proposed w ithin riparian areas, contrary to existing rules. Some biologists believe the only sum mer steelhead rearing habitat left lies in the cool waters of the upper Trout Creek basin. If the Forest Service proceeds with this aggres sive proposal, the additional silt load and raised stream temperatures may sound the death knell for the Trout Creek steelhead —the most important Deschutes tributary for native steelhead." Riverkeeper goes on to state that, “The sale proposal is vigorously op posed by Oregon Trout, the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Indian Reserva tion, the ODFW, and others. To register your opposition to this proposal, write: Arthur Currier, District Ranger, Prineville Ranger District, P.O. Box 490, Prineville, OR, 97754.” I’m hoping, when I get to go steelhead fish ing on the Deschutes, that the fish will be there, although my uncle says the runs have declined to a low where it is hard for him to get interested. I, someday, would like to take my nephew, Travis, over to the Deschutes for steelhead and I’m sure he would like the op tion to take his son someday too. Thank you, Nancy Harwood, Director Columbia County RSVP Health Center needs board members To the Editor: I have been a member of this community for 18 years, and one of my primary con cerns for this town, besides- the children, is health care. Let's face it, at one time or another we all need it. Because we live so far away from everything it is im portant to have quality care for our citizens. We are very fortunate to have a quality staff in our health center. They have w orked very hard to continue care for you under less than favo rab le c o n d itio n s. Laura and her staff worked countless hours during the disaster, some of which was their own time with no pay, Susan is a perfect ex ample of that. This is a reconstruction time for a lot of us. I ask you to consider the Health Center as a very important part o f . this town and of our lives. We will soon be back in our old building with a new face lift, much like the homes and oth er businesses around town. While conducting business, we will also be busy working on plans to relocate in the old Vernonia Drug Store location. In order to do th is we w ill need help. To continue the quality of care we now enjoy, we are asking for concerned neigh bors to become board mem bers.
