Enid Parrow, Member Vernonia Pride Volunteers make a positive impact To the Editor: August 23, 1995, at about 8:10 p.m. the Vernonia Rural Fire District was called to a structure fire at 600 Jefferson Avenue. Upon our arrival, a building was already fully in volved in fire, with many ex posures threatened. I could not help but notice the con centrated effort of neighbors and others who w orked to Butterfly Renaissance ADULT FOSTER CARE 185 C Street, Vernonia • 429-5220 ■ »■ " — _________ protect what they could. You who were there, deserve a large thank you for your ef forts. It is people such as you who help make a tragic situa tion a little easier to deal with. You all should be commend ed on your efforts to help oth ers in a time of crisis. It is with this in mind that I am asking all interested citi zens to try volunteering for your community. This volun teer work could be with any local organization that ren ders service to the communi ty and citizens of Vernonia. Just a few suggestions— Iza- ak W alton League, Lions, Vernonia Pride, Vernonia Ru ral Fire D istrict, Jam boree Committee, Senior Citizens Center—to name only a few organizations. The efforts of people like those who gave of their time on August 23rd, is what makes Vernonia a com munity of quality. Our title as one of the 10 safest places to live in Oregon did not happen by chance. It takes a great deal of effort by all who live here. On behalf of the Vernonia Rural Fire Protection District I w ould like to say a big “Thank You" to all who helped your neighbor and our fire fighters on August 23rd. If you remember, fo r som e stran ge reason, Packwood’s troubles began with the defeat of Oregon’s fair haired liberal for his sen ate seat. This business of helpless w om ankind has reached a ridiculous state of affairs any way. I learned th is lesson when a schoolboy of thirteen or fourteen when upon a dare I touched a s ch o o lm a te where I should not have. She slapped my jaws so hard my ears rang all day. Not only did it hurt but I was held up to ridicule until my schoolmates forgot the matter and some of them had memories like an Elephant too. Believe me I say this with authority, this same method w ill work on any senator or office manag er. You ladies should try it sometimes. Should Packwood be disci plined by fellow senators? Not while he is being judged by tho se who have done w orse. He may have a tongue that works like a yo yo, able to reach across a room to penetrate a woman’s throat with mouth closed and teeth clinched. But has he ever left one in the bay to drown? “Let he without sin cast the first stone." Thank You, Juneious F. Harty Scappoose Senior Center plans flea market upgrade Dear Patrons and Givers: Just an update from your Senior Center. T hank you fo r y o u r re sponse to our last letter. We are working at revamp ing our Flea Market so cloth ing will be more accessible, such as a men’s department (we know men don’t like to browse), a tee-shirt depart ment, a popular spot; ladies’ wear and kids’ racks; also a coat and ja cket spot, bed ding, draperies and kitchen brick-a-brack. Hopefully all electric items work. We still cannot handle large furniture, office equipm ent, large kit chen item s (m icro w a ve s, etc.). Shoes and clothes are fine with us. We plan on keeping prices at present levels so shoppers can afford them. Thank you to the writer of the letter we received in mid- August. It makes us aware that we are doing good, do nating our time to help those who need a boost along life's way. We are here to help and appreciate your patronage. Thank you very much, Scotty & Craw Vernonia Senior Center Please see page 11
