Vernonia Trading Post features overstock and good, used items It's an antique store, it’s a clothing store, it’s a gift shop, or a resale shop. Actually, it’s all the above, but you can save tim e by calling it Ver nonia Trading Post. The Trading Post opened for bu sin ess in early May, making its home in a portion of the large stone building at 854 Bridge Street in down town Vernonia and, since that tim e, proprietors Terry and Gail Fultz have taken sugges tions from custom ers as to what sorts of items they’d like to find in the Trading Post. The policy adopted by the ’Post, of accepting only quali ty items for consignment, has kept their shop from becom ing a transfer station for un wanted items such as worn- out furniture, broken appli ances and ragged clothing that simply take space. The husband and w ife team bought a house in Ver nonia three years ago “fulfill ing a dream to live in the country,” said Terry. “We felt w elcom e before we even m oved here. The frie n d ly people and laid-back atm o sphere are like a lost frontier,” he added. After settling down, the couple continued to fulfill their dream by preparing the tra d in g post fo r business, something they wanted to do and felt the community could b e n e fit from . “ H aving so many of the downtown build ings sitting empty is a waste,” Gail said, and she can’t stand it. In addition to the trading post, Terry works part time for Gwin Logging and is busy otherwise as a general main te n a n ce and home rep air hand. Although they are selective about the items they will take on consignment, the Fultzes invite those who have some thing useful to s e ll-c o lle c - tib le s , to o ls, housew ares, toys, or almost anything-to contact them at 429-0501. Vernonia Trading Post is officially open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sun days from 12 to 5, however, if the door is open and the flags are waving, feel free to step in and get acquainted or just browse. Little time left to apply for lottery funds Only four days remain to apply for Regional Strategies Lottery funds for Environmen tal Services, Forest Products and Tourism In d u s trie s in Columbia, Clatsop and Tilla mook Counties. A pplications fo r approxi mately $540,000 in Regional Strategies Lottery funding fo cusing on the Environmental S ervices, Forest P roducts and Tourism industries are due August 1. Eligible appli cants are Clatsop, Columbia or Tillam ook based com pa nies or organizations or pro jects which support the Envi ronm ental Services, Forest Products or Tourism indus tries. Additionally, eligible pro jects must be completed be tween O ctober 1,1994 and June, 1996. The primary purpose of the Regional Strategies funding is to create, retain or lead to family wage jobs in each of the three targeted industries. For the Environmental Ser vices industry, this is expect ed to occur through environ mental restoration and reme diation employment. For the Forest Products industry, this is expected to occur through value added product develop ment and employment. For the Tourism industry, this is expected to occur through ex tension of the visitor season. P rojects best m eeting the goal of creating family wage jobs will be given highest pri ority.
