The INDEPENDENT, July 27,1994 Page 3 Letters to the Editor By Nancy Burch, Librarian Vernonia Public Library The 1994 Summer Reading Program will soon be over. The final event and grand finale for the special events will be Wednesday, Au gust 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Anderson Park. This will be Indian legends told around a campfire by Rietta Behnke. As this summer’s program draws to an end, there are two regrets that have been expressed—first, that the end is fast approaching and second, that more of the youth and adults of Vernonia were not able to take part in learning about the arts and cul tures of the world through these presenta tions. The Australian stories, songs and slides that the Bjorems shared were entertaining and were com plem ented w ith a real kangaroo skin. Nyan Badzik was resplendent in her Russian inspired clo th in g as she showed slides and told of her adventures while visiting some of the countries that comprised the Rus sia of the past. The Tae Kwon-Do students of Doug Tesdal wore their traditional dress as the background of this Korean art of self-discipline was explained and demonstrated. “Schola,” too, was dressed in the clothing representa tive of her native county, Nigeria. Those in at tendance at this presentation were treated to African legends, songs, dance and games, and were encouraged to actively participate in all of these activities. These have been out standing activities presented by outstanding people. A pleasant, but unexpected donation will be given to each of the libraries in Columbia County by the Diary of Anne Frank Fund. Be cause the Anne Frank exhibit that was held in St. Helens last March was so successful and because the donations were so generous, the committee sponsoring the exhibit will be do nating $150.00 to each of the five public li braries for the purchase of books dealing with the subject matter of Anne Frank and the Holocaust, hatred and conflict resolution, di versity, uniqueness and multi-cultural issues. Watch for these books. They will soon be available and will be identified by the book plates indicating the source which provided their purchase. We would like to also thank the Staff of Vernonia School District for supporting the students by counting re- ceipts and turning them in. Please support our Advertisers, They make your community newspaper possible. Thank you to the Adminis trators and the school board for allowing us to pursue this project. We w ould lik e to th a n k Sentry Market for their won derful support; this fund raiser wouldn’t have been possible without them. It is wonderful to see a business that not only supports a com m unity but also supports and invests in their schools. We w ould also like to thank The INDEPENDEN T fo r being so supportive by running our stories and for th e ir continued concern for our schools. To o u r c o m m u n ity : You saw a need and you respond ed to it. You always restore my faith in mankind by com ing together to help our chil dren and our schools. Our fund raiser was a huge success this year. Our goal was to colle ct $170,000 in Sentry Market receipts but, with all your support, we col lected a total of $257,871.06 in Sentry receipts. Sentry was kind enough to donate a total of $1,700 for the math pro gram plus an IBM computer to go in our computer room at Washington Grade School for the use of all the children. Remember SENTRY RE CEIPTS = HOSTS MATH so keep saving. As som eone who has w orked to e lim in a te C o n gress’ special exceptions, I’ve c o -s p o n s o re d tw o b ills to make sure that any health care reform laws passed by Congress apply to all mem bers of Congress.
