The INDEPENDENT June 8. 1994 Pern Bingo fans have fun while raising money for two good causes The June 1st opening of Bingo games at Crazy Char lie's restaurant drew about 17 enthusiastic bingo aficiona dos. For some of the uniniti ated, it was also a learning experience. Locals accustomed to the procedures of previous bingo systems had expected to play one card at a time, at $1 per game; some did not fully un derstand the “new” system, which requires purchase of a John Naron is a happy Bingo winner! The packet, however, contains 15 sheets, each of which has six c a rd s and, o ve r the th re e hours of play, actually costs less than the one dollar per card system . P articipants may a lso buy in to 5 to 10 “special” games at a dollar each, each of w hich has three cards. Adding to the ex citement and enjoyment, raf fle tickets are available at 5 for a dollar for a drawing dur ing the evening. Lori Foster, a member of the Senior Citizens Advisory C om m ittee, researched a number of bingo operations th ro u g h o u t O reg on to b e come acquainted with the dif ferent ways in which bingo gam es are conducted. The system adopted for the joint fund raising effort here is one that is com m only used and successful, providing a fair payback to participants. W hile players must pu r chase the $15 packet at the outset, they need not stay for the full three hour session. They may leave and return at any fu tu re se ssio n to use the ir rem aining sheets, but they must return at the same hour they left since the se quence of the games cannot be altered. Among tentative summer projects are cleaning up Ora Bolmeier Park; painting light s ta n d a rd s and p re p a rin g hanging baskets. A number of hanging baskets have al ready been donated by San dra McLean Florist & Nursery along with a half-dozen half- barrels that have been dis trib u te d a lo n g the B rid ge Street business section; vol unteers w ill seek donors to furnish proper plantings. Fisher reports that Vernon ia Pride T-shirts with the logo of the organization in black and w h ite o r in c o lo r are available at Vernonia Variety at reasonable prices.
