By Charlene Bechen Banks Library Volunteer Sign up is now in progress for the Summer Reading Program. The them e this year is “Catch the Wave - Read!" Otto the surfin’ Oc topus is the mascot. Look for his smiling face on posters in the library. Weekly entertainment begins Thursday, June 23 at noon and will continue every Thursday through August 4. The series kickoff features old friends B.J and Scampy’s Merrily Magical Mischief. Partici pants last year will remember these clowns and their antics. Subsequent presentations will be by Liz- beth on June 30, We Care Sports on July 7, magician Bob Eaton on July 14, Puppets to Go on July 21, storyteller Nina Lemkuhl on July 28 and a puppet show by Cheshire Fox on August 4. All students in grades 1 through 12 may en roll in the summer reading program. Readers will set their own goals in terms of the kind and number of books they will read over the summer. Those who achieve their goal will re ceive a book award at the conclusion of the program. In conjunction with summer reading is the “Read to Me” program for preschoolers. Sign up continues through the summer. Each non reader enrolls with a partner who agrees to read to them. Coloring handouts and other sur prises are available when the child registers. The next Recycle Saturday will be June 11 from 9AM to 3PM at the SWATCO service yard, 15945 NW Sellers Road (about 1 block South of the Sunset Highway). Magazines can now be accepted for recycling, along with glass, newpapers, aluminum, steel (tin) cans corrugated cardboard, brown paper bags, mo tor oil in screw top containers and plastic milk and water jugs. Part of the proceeds from this project go to the Friends of the Library to help provide books and supplies that would not be available with county funding alone. The new book display this month features Natural Causes bv physician turned suspense writer, Michael Palmer. Dr. Sarah Baldwin, an esteemed and talented OB/GYN resident is suddenly implicated in the mysterious hemor rhaging of three pregant women. The only common thread seems to be an herbal vitamin Dr. Baldwin had prescribed for each of them. To her great surprise, one of those denounc ing her is Dr. Peter Ettinger, her mentor and ex-lover. Sarah strives to find another cause for the illnesses. If she is right, dozens of other pregnant women are at risk, and the missing factor has nothing to do with natural causes. We saw flowers on the bridge’s light- posts. The sidewalks and streets looked cleaner. We saw pan sies planted around the trees. We want to thank the Ver nonia Pride group for clean ing up the town.
