"M any m ore people are needed to help broaden the base of those who give to U n ited Way of C olum bia County," Arnits said. "Fur therm ore, despite the high unemployment in the county, the re still are many, many more employed than unem ployed. We intend to reach more of those employed to ask them to donate to help their neighbor," continued Ar nits. "United Way is based on the belief that if everyone em ployed gives a little bit every pay period, then United Way can help those neighbors in need, building a better com munity for all of us," added Soenneker. "Each year, United Way of Columbia County gives the people of our com m unities the unique opportunity to cre ate power. That power is to increase the organized ca pacity of people to care for one another. In my m ind, only the education of our chil dren is more important," com m ented Dennis H art p re si dent of the board and princi pal at John G um m and C olum bia C ity e le m e n ta ry schools. A new m em ber a g e n c y - the Emergency Support Shel- ter-w a s admitted by the di rectors during the September board meeting. The em er gency shelter is located in Kelso, Washington, but since there isn't any similar shelter in C olum bia C ounty, it re ceives and accepts numerous referrals for Columbia County residents in need, reported Arnits. Recent statistics provided by the shelter's executive di rector, Janis Dim m itt, show that the shelter is serving lo cal residents. As a member agency, they will be able to apply for United Way funding in January. "Adding this agency brings our member total to 24," Ar nits said. Am ong o th e r m em b er agencies that serve area resi dents are the Council of Se nior Citizens, COLCO Trans portation, the W omens Re source Center, Latchkey and the county food bank.
