She also expressed the importance of par- ents being actively involved in their stu- dents’ schools, as well as the surrounding communities. “If you sit at home and do nothing, your kids will copy you,” she said, adding on the fl ip side, by participating and volunteering for community events, “You’re setting an example to be giving of your time and your service.” The money raised by the fundraiser goes toward supporting a variety of activi- ties, including assemblies, special projects, free swim lessons for third-graders, and fi eld trips, as well as providing professional development opportunities and grants for teachers. “It goes straight back to the kids, or to the teachers who use it to help our kids,” Davis said. This year, the PTOs also used some of the donation and sponsorship money they raised to bring the Seaside High School Culinary Arts program to serve pancakes and sausages to participants for free. When it comes to fostering the kind of participation necessary to keep the PTOs thriving and in a position to fundraise for the schools, Davis said it comes down to out- reach and enthusiasm. “The big thing is when one parent invites another parent, it kind of grows,” she said. “If you make a place where everyone feels welcome, then there are people who are will- ing to come, and it kind of becomes more of a party than work in a way.” CLOCKWISE, FROM ABOVE The third annual Coast Color Dash fundraiser started at the Gearhart Ocean State Park and wrapped around adjacent neighborhoods. Along the way, runners and walkers were pelted with bright, colorful powder. Coast Color Dash felt like a big community party.
