6A • July 20, 2018 • Seaside Signal • seasidesignal.com Steve Wright announces election bid Cockrum, Smith will run for City Council in Gearhart By R.J. Marx Seaside Signal Steve Wright will run for City Council election in No- vember, he announced this week. “I trust that the voters of Ward #1 will decide this fall to give me the opportunity to con- tinue to serve our city for anoth- er four years,” Wright said. Wright was appointed to the council in 2017 after Jay Barber was named mayor af- ter the death of Don Larson in December 2016. At the time, Barber said Wright’s regular attendance at council meetings was a big fac- tor in his decision. Wright, a Seaside home- owner for six years, served on the Budget Committee and as president of the Seaside Mu- seum and Historical Society’s board of directors. Wright was the former chief financial officer of Columbia Grain International, a company he served with for 35 years be- fore his retirement. “I’m thankful and apprecia- tive for the opportunity to serve as the City Councilor for Ward 1 for the past one-and-a-half years,” he said this week. “It’s been a tremendous learning ex- perience, as was the two-and-a- half years I was on the Planning Commission. I’ve taken advan- tage of many opportunities to learn about the workings of the city and local businesses. I’ve found that our city operates very well and is fis- cally responsi- ble. Its employ- ees are of the highest quality and dedicated to their work. We also have Steve Wright many citizens that volunteer their time and expertise that are a huge asset to our city.” He said the council’s main concern for the future must be to do what is necessary to get the new school site ready for safe occupancy in two years. “We will continue working to improve our housing situation, being better prepared for future disasters, and many other is- sues,” Wright added. By R.J. Marx Seaside Signal Kerry Smith and Paulina Cockrum will seek a return to the Gearhart City Council. Smith and Cockrum made their re-election campaign announcements at the city’s July 11 council meeting. So far, they are the only candi- dates. Smith, a Gearhart resi- dent for more than 30 years, worked in the home con- struction industry and with the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. He was elected to the council’s District 1 seat in 2014, defeating incumbent Al Carder. Smith said he enjoys the work and working with the council. “I’d like to see us bring Gearhart into the 21st century completely — but stay small, stay friendly and not lose sight of that,” he said. Originally from Seattle, Cockrum is a nurse at Co- lumbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria and was selected by the governor to serve on the Coordinated Care Organiza- tion Criteria Work Group. A former member of the Gear- hart Planning Commission, Cockrum was appointed by Mayor Dianne Widdop to fill the unexpired term of City Councilor John Duncan in District 3 after Duncan died in 2015. Cockrum serves on the city’s Community Emergen- cy Response Team. “Most importantly, I would like to be an advo- cate for our current compre- hensive plan and make sure we’re following that in every subject that comes to us, any development we undertake,” Cockrum said after the meet- ing. She characterized her time on the council as posi- tive and praised the council’s ability to compromise.
