WASHINGTON. D. C„ June 8.—
With the date ot the Bal'lmore con­
vention drawing near, members of
congress in both houses are begin­
ning to discuss the “availability" of
candidates for the democratic nomi­
nation. The shifting sentiment in
the republican ranks which makes It
impossible to predict the winner of
the Chicago convention Is causing
leading democratic members of the
house and senate to consider seriously
who among the men running for Yhe
democratic nomination would prove
strongest against the republican nom­
inee, whoever he may be. Particu­
larly is this question interesting the
members from pivotal states—states
that It will be necessary for the de­
mocracy to carry if victory is to come
Il November. There seems to be no
dissenting voice among the leading
democrats in the bouse who represent
the so-called doubtful states that
Speaker Clark would be by far the
strongest candidate. It is pointed
out that the present strong position
of the democratic party is due solely
to the splendid record of the demo­
crats in the sixty-first congress and
their record since they became a ma­
jority. The consensus of opinion is
that to Speaker Clark more than to
any other democrat is due the suc­
cess of the party in the congressional
campaign of 1910. and it is further
emphasized that he. more than any­
one elne has harmonized and held to­
gether the once discordant democracy
until now it is united and victorious.
If the democrats are to elect a presi­
dent of the United States, It must be
upon the record of the democratic
house, leading democrats from these
"pivotal” states assert, and the rec­
ord of the democratic house is the
record of Champ Clark.

TO GO TO STOCKHOLM

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu­
gene, June 11.—William D. Hawvard.
director of athletics at the University
of Oregon, has left for New York,
where he will meet Martin Hawkins
and Walter McClure, Oregon's repre­
sentatives at the Olympic games, and
accompany them to Stockholm.
It was thought for a while that Mr.
Hawyard would be unable to attend,
but at the last moment the necessary
funds were secured, and he was sent
to train, not only Oregon’s men. but
also Courtney of Washington, a
sprinter; Horine of California, a high
jt.mper. and Kelly of Southern Cal­
ifornia. a hurdler. It is considered
an important item for the coast men
that they may have a coast trainer of
Hayward's ability.
On June 12th a meet between all
the athletes will be held in New
York for the purpose of aiding the
(earn on its trip to Stockholm. Wal­
ter McClure will be entered, but due
to the fact that Martin Hawkins was
detained by his examinations he will
be unable to enter.
The team has chartered a boat,
upon which the members will travel
and live during the entire trip.
The Olympic games will be held
some time in July, and the United
States has excellent chances of cap­
turing the meet.
THE MARINES BEHAVE

tention to yesterday’s engagement be­
tween the United States marines and
the Rebels in Cuba, except to sav
that the marines “behave splendidly
under fire."

Going to Get Married
Sam Bishop, the colored porter at
Swanson's No. 2 barbershop, left Tues­
day for Georgia. He announced be­
fore leaving that he was going South
for a wife, and expected to bring her
back to Klamath Falls with him
shortly.
