Vowing a bitter campaign of retaliation which will drive every bootleggor from the state, members of the Wo men's Christian Temperance Union aro mourning the death of their mil itant leader, Mrs. C. B. Cook, be lieved to have been assassinated by a bootlegger. Mrs. Cook died Tuesday from the tffocts of a bullet wound noar the honrt. She had been shot by an unidentified assailant as she sat near a window In her home. The cold blooded killing climaxed a week's Campaign against booie suspects In which she Is said to have partici pated. Her testimony In sevoral cases had helped convict bootleggers, and there were few persons hated more by the Illicit booze vendors of Benton coun ty, where Mrs. Cook was president of tho county chnpter. Mint While Writing Authorities declaro their convic tion that tho killing was the re Tense of a bootlegger or possibly of a boot legging clique. The members of the W. C. T. U. hold the samo view, and Miss Minnie Usher, secre tary of the county organization, has pledged her order to renewed Btrifo against tho rnm gangs. "This Is not the end of tho W. C. T. U. In Iowa," sobbed Mrs. S. W. Cook, mother-in-law of the victim. "Wo are going to hol& the torch still higher. This murder, tho shoot-; Ing down of a (iod-rcaring woman in her homo, only rousos us to new efforts to crush tho Illicit liquor trade In this community. Mrs. Cook's homo was near the railroad tracks and near a rendei- 'vous for rum runnora and bootleg peddlers. Onco, during her fight to drive out the alcohol traffic, a gang of men deluged the houso with a barrage of rotten eggs. Lecturing, writing pamphlets and doing sleuth ing of her own, she maintained an ever vigilant wnr against the rum clan. Is Found DyliiK She was seated near an open win dow late Monday night preparing a paper to be read at the county convention of the W. C. T. U. when the shooting occurred. The shade had been drawn to within three Inches of the window sill, but per sons standing in the darkness out side could have seen the woman dis tinctly, authorities say. The shot apparently had boon aimed with deadly accuracy. , Suddenly there was the roar of a shot and a simultaneous tinkle of glass. Tho bullet ' had crashed through the window. . Mrs. Cook's mother, Mrs. E. Un derwood, rushed Into the room to find her daughter lying on the floor, screaming. Then the victim lapsed Into unconsciousness and died with out speaking. Tho bullet had pass ed through her left arm before piercing br Kept Vinton Oicnn Mr rook won the title of "Iowa's Carrie Nation" through her. ardent labor for tho temperanco cuuso Un der her leadership Vinton had been virtually rid of bootleggers. The last clean-up was so effective that Sheriff Whileficld Ruhl announced several days ago Vinton was "dry as the Sahara," and offered a $25 reward out of his own pocket to anyone who could purchase liquor In the city. Ruhl la now leading the forces scouring the countryside for trace of the murderer, but no clues havo been obtained aa yet. "Lingerie has ceased to linger," a mill owner complained "Petti coats have boome so potty, when present at all, as to be a mere apology. I won't go Into more de tail; but I will say that our busi ness threatens to flop entirely un less there Is a change In women's under fashions. "Even our own girls who make their living making thorn won't wear them any more. "All wo havo left Is the stock ing trade. I suppose that's safe for the winter months anyway."
