WILL THE NEXT SIXTEEN YEARS MEAN AS MUCH
FOR KLAMATH?
Just sixteen years ago yesterday the first passenger
train pulled into Klamath Falls, the picturesque mule
train became a memory and the stage coach became his
tory. Klamath Falls put on its holiday attire and be
decked the first passenger engine with flowers. It mark
ed the passing of the old order; the stage coach and
freight team wera to be superseded by the train and the
automobile. On that date Klamath Falls had a popula
tion of about 2500 people, today it has at least 7.000.
Most of the fertile lands in the county were then covered
with sage brush. The sage brush is now a memory and
the lands are cultivated to alfalfa or otherwise utilized.
Dairying was then a subject of remote speculation, today
it is coming into its own and promises to vie with other
sections that have become prosperous through this one
industry. At the time of the advent of tha engine Klam
ath Falls and the Klamath country were practically in
accessible by highway, and a freight team stuck in the
mud was not an uncommon sight. Today Klamath county
has a system of highways that compare favorably with
sections that boast up-to-date road construction. At that
time this section was a horse country, the auto was in the
offing. The horse has joined the memories of the pack
train and the stage coach, and so numerous are the au
tomobiles today that it is difficult to find space for park
ing on the principal streets of the city.
But looking into the future what may we prophesy
for the next sixteen years? It would appear that the
period juHt pM has b?en only a wait for what has now
appeared. Klamath, Full today is nut looking forward
to the coming of one engine, but is expecting a flock of
.iron horses. No section of the Tnited States can reason
ably expect the railway construction that appears to be
logically certain to take place in the Klamath country.
And the building permits disclose the fact that Klamath
Falls, comparatively, exceeds all other towns in the state,
in the way of construction. With a payroll of a million
and a half dollars a month from its industries, the im
mediate future promises to double this volume, and the
next sixteen years will see it quadrupled. This year will
add three thousand people to Klamath's population. Is
it oo much to predict that at least that number will be
added each year to the population of this city and that
the rounding out of the next sixteen year period will find
a population of at least fifty thousand people in Klam
ath Falls? . ...

SPURNS TITLES
South Africa's parliament has definitely declared
against the granting of titles by the king to subjects of
South Africa. The resolution was opposed by several
men with titles as trenching upon the king's prerogative
handicapping the prime minister.
General Hertzog, the prime minister, however, fav
ored the resolution. He declared that titles tended to
create caste and class, whereas in the old republics the
ideas of absolute equality had been maintained in such
form that the humblest might become president.
