Griffith-Carter Tiff Heads Boxing Action PITTSBURGH (UPI) On this coldest pecember 20th in Pittsburgh's history, the wow. festooned city will be treated tonight to what shapet up as a rod hot fight between world welterweight champion Emile Griffith ind lop middleweight contender Rubin (Hurricane) Carter. Griffith's 147ipound title will not be at 6take in this nation ally televised 10-rounder at the Civic Arena, but his prestige as "Fighter of the Year" and his hopes (or a hot at the mid dleweight 160-pound) crown will be hanging on every punch. His prestige will plummet and his middleweight hopes will drop to zero the temperature outside if he loses. Pittsburgh's Dec. 20 record of four above zero was established in 1HB4. Slugger Carter of Paterson, NJ., also will be risking his chances of soon challenging Liberty Tilt "lis" Work PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -Brief workouts were planned to day by Mississippi State and North Carolina Stato in a tune up for Saturday's clash at Phil adelphia Stadium in the fifth annual Liberty Bowl football game. Elslon Howard of the New York Yankees ranked third at .528 and Dick Stuart of the Boston Red Sox and Jimmio Hall of the Twins were tied for fourth at .521 each. Killebrcw went to bat 515 of ficial times and had 70 singles, 18 doubles and 45 homers for 286 total bases. Slugging per centages are computed by di viding total at-bats into total bases. Damon finished second in Thursday's 20-kilomctcr race and compiled 481.84 points in Jus best two of three races at tiits northeastern Oregon resort. Ho was on l h e 11)56 U. S. Olympic cross-country team and the I960 biathlon team. Ho also won the 1959 North American biathlon title at Squaw Valley, Calif. Other cross - country team members are Karl Bohlin, Min neapolis; Mike Gallagher, Rut land, Vt.; Dick Taylor. Gilford, N.H.; Eddy Demers, Lebanon, N.H., and Peter Lahdcnpera, Fort Collins, Colo. Bohlin won Thursday's race in 82 minutes and S3 seconds afler an all-night trip from West Yel lowstone, Mont., where he look part in the biathlon trials Wed nesday. Owls Seek First Oregon Tech Sessions Seek Openings For Speed Twins Oregon Tech. winless in five trips to the post, goes alter the initial win of the season this evening at Areata, Calif., as the Owls face the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in the first game of a two-game set. "We're paying the price of in experience now," is the opinion of head man Jim Partlow. Three of the Owls' starting five are freshmen and the roster includes six first-year men. A seventh freshman, forward Wade Larkin from Vallejo, Calif., has been lost for the season because of a leg injury. He returned to his home Thurs day for a possible operation and is not expected to return. But the slow and nearly dis astrous start for the Owls has not dimmed the enthusiasm of either the team nor Partlow. "We still have a lot of talent. They're not in the class with the championship club of last year nor the previous year. The nation's smallest eager in the game designed for the big men guard Ralph Anderson at 54 and tiie talented Crater Comet, Mike Glines at 5-8, are high in the overall scoring pic ture for the Owls. It was this pair leading the Owl scoring last weekend against the Pacific Badgers as Anderson led with 12 and 17 points in the two games and Glines was a close second with 11 and 16 points. The practice sessions this week have been designed to spring the two speedy back court men loose for driving field goal attempts and to take additional pressure off the Owls' No. 1 scorer, Rich Lyons. If this attempt is successful against the Lumberjacks to night, the Owls stand a g o o d chance of recording the first win of the season. The No. 1 threat to the Owls in the uniform of the Lumber jacks is Ron Good, an out standing guard with the top outside shooting eye who pock eted 35 points against the Wil lamette Bearcats last Friday night at Salem in a losing overtime encounter.
