Rebuilding Job Begun For Luckless SF 49ers SAN FRANCISCO (UPP-The rebuilding job on the San Fran cisco Forty Nincrs starts to day. The Forty Niners, who lost (heir final ball game on Satur day to the Green Bay Packers but won a lot of friends doing K, will be loaded with new faces when llio 1984 roll call is sounded. Quarterback Lamar Mcllan, tackle Leo Komellini and back Joe Perry have announced tlvey are retiring. Several others w!k have had roii,'h going this season while the Forty Niners were stum bling through a 2-12 campaign, probably will be cut adrift so that the new draft choices will have a chance to make ood. But no matter what happens, the players today were unani mous in their hope that coach Jack Christiansen would be back at tlie holm. After San Francisco lost a toughie to Green Bay by a 17-21 score Saturday, tlie griddi-rs wont all out for the coach. "I hope tlie whole coaching ' staff returns," said guard Bruce JSosley. "I sure hope Christiansen is retained as coach," said quar terback John Urodie, who was out most of the season w ith an arm injury. The Forty Niners put on one of their finest exhibitions of the season in the loss to Green Bay. Next he pitched one to the one-yard stripe and Joe Morrison did a swan dive over the middle for the big six. Although the Bears should be slight favorites for the show down at Chicago, the New York Giants undoubtedly consider them a refreshing change from the Green Bay Packers, who walloped tlicm two straight years in the title game. This will be tlie sixth playoff meeting between the Bears and Giants. No NFL division rivals ever have met as many times. The Bears haven't won a play, off title since 1946 when they beat the Giants. The Lions, still full of fight, battled back to score on a four yard run by Terry Barr and then the Bears' defense was called on for its finest efforts to keep Detroit from going ahead. First, the Bears stopped Georgia Tech quarterback Billy Lothridgc, each collected 10 votes. Halfback Sherm Lewis ot Michigan Stale drew eight votes, Auburn quarterback Jim my Sidle six and Illinois center Dick Butkus 5.
