It was found by sur veyor Con Borsting, forester for the Weyerhaueser Com pany, who was running lines to locate a starting point for a timber survey south of Hayden Mountain recently. Rec ords revealed the blaze was made Feb. I, 1858, by a David P. Thompson. The area had been logged off 40 or 50 years ago. The old blaze will be on display at the Col lier Logging Museum on U.S. Highway 97 north of Klam ath Falls. Century-Old Blaze Found Near Keno By Foresters A scar or blae made by Surveyor David P. Thompson with a scribe iron, more than a century ago, was found recent ly by Con Borsting, and other foresters who were seeking some marking that would de termine a corner or a variant from which a survey could start. In the process, they discov ered a memento of earlier days, a grown-over blaze with two let ters, TB, still well preserved on a bit of pitchy wood, long grown over with tree rings of later years. Tile letters were reversed and raised above the surface of the original wood, due to the ori ginal BT acting as a mold for the growth of new wood. The area south of Hayden Mountain. 10 miles west of Keno, had been logged off prob ably 23 lo 40 years ago and had been purchased by t h e Weyerhaeuser Company for a tree farm. , The foresters, in arriving at a place where they believed a corner should be, discovered the old survey stake lo be gone. In looking around at stumps on tJie logged-off land, t h ey found one that still showed a scar on the tree stump. Tree bark, woodsmen say, never loses the scar of an ax. Rark was still on the rotten stump. When this was removed, t h e old bla.e was found.
