Eisenliowcr also urged that succession lo the presidency le changed to keep the administra tion "heading in the same poli tical direction" in the event of an emergency. Eisenhower said Hie present line from Hie president, vice president, to blic s))caker of the House, pr esident pro tempore of the Senate and then to the cab inet is illogical. The former chief executive said he preferred a previous system that called for the sec retary of state and other cabi net members to follow the vice president in line of succession. This was the law prior to 11I47. "1 believe that the earlier or der of succession is a more log ical one which would keep Hie presidency heading in the same political direction until the elec torate has an opportunity to make its further Welles known," Eisenhower said. ' When Lyndon ,B. Jirtinson be came president House .Speaker John AtcCormack 72, and Ken. Carl llayden, O-Ariz., 85, be came next in line respectively to succeed to Hie presidency. However, Eisenhower pointed out in the Post article that the speaker of the House is elected by a district and the president pro temporc of tlie Senate by a flale. ". . .Neither necessarily rellects tit? will of the whole electorate," he added. The present line of succes sion, Eisenhower said, makes it "possible (or a man to succeed lo the presidency who is out of sympathy with the aims and p o' I i c i e s of the administra tion. . ." Britain and the United States, who resisted a similar request in tlie past, have been in close consultation on the latest de mand for several days. The sources said a final decision is imminent. The U S. and Briti.-h govern ments are still cool in principle to a conference at which Rus sia ami Communist China would be represented, the sources said. On tlie same day, he renewed his call for an international con ference to guarantee Cambo dia's neutrality and independ ence.
