the .Salui'day Evening Post.
Eisenliowcr also urged that
succession lo the presidency le
changed to keep the administra
tion "heading in the same poli
tical direction" in the event of
an emergency.
Eisenhower said Hie present
line from Hie president, vice
president, to blic s))caker of the
House, pr esident pro tempore of
the Senate and then to the cab
inet is illogical.
The former chief executive
said he preferred a previous
system that called for the sec
retary of state and other cabi
net members to follow the vice
president in line of succession.
This was the law prior to 11I47.
"1 believe that the earlier or
der of succession is a more log
ical one which would keep Hie
presidency heading in the same
political direction until the elec
torate has an opportunity to
make its further Welles
known," Eisenhower said. '
When Lyndon ,B. Jirtinson be
came president House .Speaker
John AtcCormack 72, and Ken.
Carl llayden, O-Ariz., 85, be
came next in line respectively
to succeed to Hie presidency.
However, Eisenhower pointed
out in the Post article that the
speaker of the House is elected
by a district and the president
pro temporc of tlie Senate by a
flale. ". . .Neither necessarily
rellects tit? will of the whole
electorate," he added.
The present line of succes
sion, Eisenhower said, makes it

74 Nations May Meet
On Cambodia Neutrality
LONDON ' L'PI i The United
States may join Russia and
Communist China soon in a 14
nation conference to negotiate
Cambodia's demands for a
guarantee of its neutrality
and independence, diplomatic
sources said Friday.'
Britain and the United States,
who resisted a similar request
in tlie past, have been in close
consultation on the latest de
mand for several days. The
sources said a final decision is
imminent.
The U S. and Briti.-h govern
ments are still cool in principle
to a conference at which Rus
sia ami Communist China would
be represented, the sources
said. Hut they fear that rejec
tion of the request at this time
might drive Cambodia into Pek

Prime Norodom Sihanouk,
head of state in the strategic
Southeast Asian nation, angrily
renounced American aid Nov. 1(1
and told U.S. economic and
military advisers to leave the
country. He pemiitted J''rcnch
military advisers to remain,
however, and has indicated he
would welcome increased a I d
from France.
On tlie same day, he renewed
his call for an international con
ference to guarantee Cambo
dia's neutrality and independ
ence. The United States and Britain
are in a difficult position
because agreement on the con
ference could imply recognition
of Sihanouk's charges of ag
gressive intentions by Thailand
and South Vict Nam, both allies
of the West. .
Communist China has been
attempting to exploit Sihanouk's
