Then there's his new one, "The Incredible Journey," which costars two dogs and a Siamese cat. Human beings arc incidental to the story and make only brief appearances. As long as he climbs into his doctor's tunic five days a week for his "Ben Casey" scries, Ed wards doesn't have time for a wife. He barely has enough time for Vince Edwards. At 35, the bull-shouldered ac tor is a product of instant suc cess. For 10 years he loitered on the fringes of show business, playing bit parts and wondering where his next meal would come from. Now he's living like a star well, the Edwards' ver sion pf it anyhow. His principal status symbol is a plush four-room dressing room office on the Desilu lot. Dec orated in red, black and white furnishings, it is complete with small kitchen, bar, steam room, bedroom all with indirect light ing, modern paintings and thick carpeting. There's nothing like it in Hollywood. Even Lucille Rail, who owns Desilu, doesn't have as luxur ious quarters. Edwards spends most of his waking hours during the week in his dressing room when he Most Disney tion of critters is not a cold, cut and dried relationship. Kids and Animals "Children grow up with ani mals," he said during lunch in his studio commissary, "and so did I. They're a constant source of interest to kids dogs, cats, turtles, birds. All of them." A kindly man, Disney has never gone hunting in his life: "I never wanted to kill any thing. 1 do enjoy shooting guns occasionally but at targets." Steak Lunch Between takes he removes the tunic in favor of a sports shirt, folds his big, hairy forearms across his chest and sprawls out on one of the divans. His lunch, usually steak, tomatoes and a bottle of beer, is brought into him from a nearby restaurant. At the end of the working day, usually around 7 o'clock, Edwards whose real name is Vincent Zoino hops into his l!ir4 Cadillac Fleetwood or his Jaguar for the I5-minute drive home. Almost all of the time, he stops en route for dinner in a restaurant where he hopes he won't be recognized. No false modesty, he claims, just loo tired to be charming to well meaning fans. His current home is tempor ary, but comfortable. A two-year-old ranch style, the house is perched high in the Hollywood hills with a spectacu lar view of Los Angeles, ft has two bedrooms and two baths, and looks like anything but a Movies to the study Of wildlife in nat ural settings. "On the other hand some nature purists rip me up one Bide and down the other for personalizing animals," Disney grinned. "I guess they object to the personalities we give our cartoon characters. "But I don't think we do any harm with them. Animals arc a part of our daily lives, and in that respect it only makes sense to include them in motion pic tures." SOUND ON FILM NEW YORK (UPI) - The Command Record Co. uses 35 mm sound film rather than con ventional tape for making re cordings. Enoch Light, the ex ecutive director, used 90,000 feet of film to record "1963: The Year's Most Popular Themes," a movie theme album. The average mo tion picture uses 7,500 feet of film. Edwards is meticulous about his surroundings, just as he is about his clothes. His house was decorated by John Sturdevant, the set dec orator for Big Crosby Produc tions, in modern Polynesian mo tif with an abundance of tropi cal greenery sprouting from in door planters. It resembles something out of a brochure from the Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce. Deceptively gentle, Edwards' tough, broken - nosed kisser masks what appears to be a basic shyness. There are bird feeders all around his property which he keeps filled with grain. Wildlife Lover And if he is fond of wildlife, Edwards is really crazy about domestic animals, specifically horses. Race horses. When Hollywood Park, Santa Anita and Del Mar are operat ing Vince spends almost all his free time at the track belting on the bangtails. He. has a repu tation (or being one of Holly wood's top plungers. From time to time he has shared ownership of Thorough breds with some of his friends. None of them became big win ners. In the off-season and as often as possible when the ponies are running, Vince visits a gym to work on the weights. At 200 pounds, he is a mass of mus cles, but it would be a mistake to write him off as a big stiff who got lucky. He's a thoughtful, introverted man who writes essays and philosophical pieces at home. He visits art exhibits alone and with friends. He favors foreign movies which he frequently screens in the evening for his dates or a group of acquaint ances. He remembers his strug gling days and stays in contact with his buddies from that pe riod. Star Swimmer Edwards is a licensed pilot. He plays tennis and swims for relaxation. In his college days he was a star backstroke swim mer at Ohio State University. Later he enrolled at the Uni versity of Hawaii, which may account for his taste in exotic interior decoration. Americans, Reds Make Join Film BUDAPEST (UPI i - East West tensions have slackened in a very real way along the Hun garian Danube with the shoot ing of the first joint American Hungarian film to be completed any day now. This is tlie first time that an American company, Cinerama, has teamed with a Communist film company, in this case the Hungarofilm Company. Technicians for this unique bit of international cooperation are basically half and half. The American producer is Thom as Conroy, while Istvan Steve Nemeskuerty is tlie Hungarian production half. American Rich ard Thorpe is the director. The chief cameraman is Hungary's best, Istvan Hilde brand. Working together with him, separated only by an in terpreter, is Cinerama's top sound expert, Fred Bosch. The stars of the picture are American comic Buddy Hack ett and suave George Sanders, making the 75th film of his long career. The plot of tlie story, "The Golden Head," concerns the stealing of one of the Hungar ian national treasures, the head of St. Laszln, from its resting place in the Cathedral of Gyoer, some 90 miles northwest of Bu dapest. Equipment has been pooled for the film. Cinerama supplied (lie cameras and sound system while the Hunnia Studios sup plied the studio facilities and technicians. But once I got up there I relaxed a little. I was nervous, but not terrified."
