Pre-game thoughts of Merrill head man Gene Christensii prior to the departure of the Huskies for Maupin and t "i t state semifinal battle with tne Wasco Redsides. The role of the favorite must be accorded the host Redsides but only by the smallest of margins. Many factors must be consid ered as the Redsides assurr? the dubious role of the favore f tiyim: - -An undefeated record over a season of 10 -tough football games. A backfield composed of the fastest backs the Huskies have faced all season. A crunching ground attack which has accounted for an average of 29.4 points per game. A pair of backs who have combined against stiff opposi tion to pile up 1,631 yards be tween them. And that indefinable some thing known as playing on tiii home grounds. They can all be considered in taking a long lock at the Re sides. Still, the Huskies narrow the margin of the underdog with a number of facits of the game riding on their side: An equally impressive set of backs with impressive stat figures to match. A forward wall not huge, but large enough to move the opposite number with regular ity and possessing a key fac torquickness. An undefeated record in eight grid contests. Two backs who have piled up a total between them of 1.816 yards in just eight con tests and a quarterback who has hit his mark on better than 50 per c e n t of the aerial at tempts for another 767 yards and 16 touchdowns. The experience of going the playoff route last year. And a big offense which has stacked up 3,103 yards in those eight games. . Thus the Huskies narrow the margin by which the Hcdsides are favored considerably. Much has been said regard ing the offensive ability of the two teams. Tile two teams have recorded impressive defensive records in moving into the semifinals, also. The Redsides have scored 294 points in 10 outings for t h e i r 2S.4 per game scoring average, while allowing the opposition a 53-point total or a 5 5 per game scoring mark. The largest score against tlie Redsides was in the first game of the season against A-2 John Day, when the Wasco eleven posted a 13-12 victory. However, the Redsides have been scored upon at least once all the other games except two. The Huskies have limited the opponents to 62 points in eight games for an average of 7.7, while scoring 275 points for a THE COACHES CHUCK STAPLETON Chuck Stapleton is in his second year as head football coach of the Wasco Redsides at Maupin. Of special interest to Ore gon State fans is the fact Chuck is the brother of former Beaver football as sistant, Clay Stapleton. The popular Clay Staple ton left Oregon State's ranks for the head coaching spot at Iowa State. Chuck is the younger brother of the former Ore gon State coach, and as he says, "About 15 , years younger." Chuck Stapleton attended college at Wyoming and fol lowing graduation moved to Virginia where lie was as sistant prep coach four years. He and his wife visited Oregon on vacation during the summer three years ago and liked the country and de cided to return. Stapleton first came to Maupin last year and t h e Redsides have posted a rec ord for the two years of 12-6. The first year was none loo successful for him as a 2-6 record went into the books, but this year the Redsides have moved along steadily to a semifinals berth with an undefeated 10-0 record. In yardage figures, the Hus kies havo held their foes to a total of 1.232 yards, while amassing their 3.103 total. The Huskies will hold a slight weight advantage over the Red sides, with an offensive line average of 173 pounds per man and a backfield mark of 158.7 pounds. Kor the Redsides, the listed offensive line will average 161.3 and the backfield 152.6. The Huskies will be faced with the speedy work of left half Joe Miller, a 140-pound speedster; right halfback D a 1 Hammer, another scooter weighing in at 135 pounds and the fullback rushes of Jud Bus well, a 190-pound junior. The passing attack is han- GENE CHRISTENSEN In his third year as head man of the Huskies, Gene Christensen joined the 'Mer rill staff in 1961 after one year teaching and coaching at Bly. Christensen attended high school at Lead, S.D.. and following graduation attend ed Black Hills Teachers Col lege at Spearfish, S.D. There Christensen played his collegiate football as a fullback in the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference which is comparable to the Oregon Collegiate Conference in size of schools and size of league. "We didn't have particu larly good teams, principal ly because there wasn't much of an athletic program and no recruiting at all. "But, I understand now the program has improved considerably," Christensen comments. Both Christensen and Mer rill basketball coach Jerry Groenevcld looked to posi t i o n s in Oregon following college. Both had attended Lead High School and Groeneveld joined the Mer rill staff two years before Christensen came to Oly. The two old high school , mates now assist each other in the two sports. Christensen lakes a 17-9 overall record in the s t a t e semis, with a 2-6 mark posted the first year at Mer rill. The Huskies came on for a 7-3 mark and a state finals berth last year in this second term and this year current ly own an 8-0 record. The Huskies counter with their own brand of speed and deception in the persons of left half Ken Smith and right half back Bob Moore. And in the aerial game, (lie Huskies will use the passing wizardry of southpaw Dale Kurtz. The Redsides have used a va riety of successful running plays from their wing-T, bal anced - line offense, w ith much success found in running Ibe tackles, the ends and reverses. In this respect the teams are similar, with tlie Huskies using all of these and adding other variations plus the passing threat of Kurtz. This is the picture as two fine teams head into the state semifinals Saturday afternoon at Maupin. The Huskies left via bus this morning at 11 a.m., with an overnight stay and a short workout slated at Madras before traveling on into Maupin Sat urday morning. Both teams were reported at full strength for tlie important encounter. Kickoff time is 1:30 p.m., with the winner ticketed for the state finals next weekend against the w inner of the Yon-calla-Jefferson contest.
