PAGE-IDA HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath Falli, Oregon Wednesday, November 20, 1963 Juvenile Office Lists Traffic Statistics Auto accidents caused by Ju veniles in Klamath County this ytat have resulted in damages totaling nearly $10,000, accord ing to statistics from the Coun ty Juvenile Department. The department reported that traffic violations by juve niles have -esulted in 29 auto crashes this year and damages total $9,578. five of the accidents oc curred in October and they ac counted for $2,114 in damages, i -There were five juvenile caused accidents in September, causing $2,041 in damages. Fifty six citations for traffic violations were issued to juve niles during October by all po lice agencies a drop from 67 the previous month. The 56 citations were issued to 52 in dividuals. The October total brought the total for the year to 575 citations. Of the October total, 28 came from Oregon State Police, 22 from Klamath Falls police, and six from other agencies. Two of the five citations that resulted from auto accidents DENNIS THE MENACE during October were for failure to yield the right of way to a vehicle. Two others were for violation of the basic rule and one youth was cited for improp er vehicle license after an ac cident. Of the 56 citations issued dur ing the month for traffic viola tions, 50 were to boys and the remainder to girls. Twenty of the boys issued citations were between the ages of 17 and 17.8 years. Three of the six girls cited were from IB to 16.6 years old. As a result of the citations, seven juvenile licenses were suspended five partially and two for more than 60 days. Two of the cases were trans ferred to district court from the juvenile authorities and one was transferred to another area. The Legislative Council's Commerce Committee might propose just such a law. Sen. R. R. Greive, D-Seattlc, committee chairman, said the lawmakers decided to ask the full council for permission to in vestigate the subject of tele phone solicitations. "We haven't gotten into the subject yet," Greive said, "but right now it appears that these telephone calls are an invasion of privacy." lie said tlie committee has re ceived "numerous complaints" from persons who have been an noyed by salesmen who use the telephone to make their pitches. "A number of housewives have told us that they have had to get out of the shower or let dinner burn on the stove to an swer the phone only to find that the caller is a salesman , " Greive said. "My wife says that she has received as many as four such calls in a single day," he added. Greive said the committee wanted to hold hearings on the subject to help the lawmakers decide if legislation is needed. If the committee decides to take some action to protect the public from the ringing tele phone, Greive said, the legisla tion could take any one of sev eral different forms. For instance, he said, the leg islature might require telephone companies to include a notation in telephone books showing which subscribers were willing to answer calls from salesmen. Or the state might license and regulate telephone solicita tion firms, he said.
