HERALD AND SEWS, Klamath Neuberger Likes Lady Candidate WASHINGTON (UPU - Poli tics aside, the lady senator (rom Oregon thinks the lady senator from Maine is fine presidential timber. Sen. Maurine Neuberger, D Ore., did not go so far Sunday to say she would vote for Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, ft Maine, who has been consider ing running for the GOP presi dential nomination. Mrs. Smith also has been mentioned as a possible Repub lican vice presidential candi date. Mrs. Neuberger said she ' thought the only other female senator should "take a fling" at going after the presidential nomination. A female president is inevita ble sometime, Mrs. Neuberger said, "and I can't think of a better person to pioneer than Margaret Chase Smith." Mrs. Smith might garner some votes from women who were only being loyal to their (own sex, Mrs. Neuberger pre dicted, but she said the Maine Republican was more than able to stand on her own record. "She has a long record of legislative experience, she's an able member of the Senate. . . as she was of the House, Mrs. Neuberger said in a radio inter view. Mrs. Smith still has not de cided whether she will enter the New Hampshire presiden tial primary March 10 against Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and probably Sen. Barry Goldwa ter, R-Ariz. Mrs. Neuberger said Mrs. Smith would be an "asset to any of the proposed nominees on the Republican ticket, be cause all of them have some faults or some shortcoming in the minds of the public." Others who have praised Mrs. Smith include: President Kennedy, at a re cent news conference, said the lady from Maine wou'd be a - "formidable" opponent if she decided to enter the New Hampshire primary. . Rockefeller described Mrs. Smith as a "wonderful person and a very able woman and I hope she will come into the New Hampshire primary." UPI Telephoto Rockefeller Attacks Views Of Goldwater WASHINGTON I UPI) Gov. Nelson Rockefeller invaded Washington today fresh from a series of vigorous verbal at tacks on his leading potential opponent for the 1964 GOP presidential nomination, Sen. Barry Goldwater. The New York Republican was accompanied by his wife, "Happy." whose marriage to the multi-millionaire following his divorce has been blamed lor lessening his presidential prospects. In St. Louis Sunday Rockefel ler lashed out at Goldwater, whose nomination, he said could be disastrous for the Re publican party. He said that the nature of Goldwater's Conservative views which appeared in his book "Conscience of a Conserva tive," would lead to "a cam paign in which President Ken nedy could expose these posi tions in a way that would be disastrous for the party." While stating that the Arizona Conservative was "a very at tractive personality" and "has shown independence." Rockefel ler said that in his opinion it would be impossible for Gold water to get the nomination without changing his present views. Rockefeller predicated his be lief on the view that the Re publican party will adopt a platform to which Goldwater would have to commit himself. "The platform is adopted be fore the candidate is nomi nated, so the fight will come CLOSE OUT! While They Last! FRIGIDAIRE 30" . He told a reporter he wanted to quit before anybody could claim he was losing his grip. Up until now, that is the last criticism any House mem ber would be likely to level at him.
