HERALD AND Youth Digs In Garbage WINSTON- SALEM, N.C. (UPII Donald Tison Davis resumed the tedious task Wed nesday of sifting through tons of garbage in search of the $420 he allegedly stole from a cafe teria. Police said Tuesday the 18-year-old busboy admitted tak ing the money last Wednesday .and hiding it in a garbage can at the Reynolds Manor Cafete ria where he worked. When he returned to pick up the cash Thursday, he found the can had been emptied. He was arrested Monday. Police have agreed to let Da vis search for the loot. He started Wednesday morning un der police supervision at a gar bage dump where 320.000 pounds of garbage are dumped daily. DEAR POLLY My neighbor and I have joined forces in the battle against the high cost of living. To Ishop each market for its weekly specials is un economical. Therefore, we now shop for each other, going to different supermarkets. We keep our things in separate bags along with cash register receipts and trading stamps. Sew the width edges of a lightweight blanket over each of the hoops. They will he gathered on. This will leave two edges coming together to form an opening. Gathers can be pulled together to close the opening when you are Inside. Tie two (pieces of heavy cord across the open top, dividing it Into four equal parts. Honk . heavy wire at the center o! the cord where they cross. Make a large hook at Ihe other end of the wire to hang over the limb of a tree. Loops can be sewed Inside at (lie top to hold tow els, clothes, etc. This can be folded flat, to the size of the hoops, to bo carried in the car or to store away when not in use. What with all the elephant jokes that have been making the rounds lately, I have some difficulty taking elephants se riously. But Leech was on the level. Applicants will take a nation wide competitive examination Dec. 14 as the first step to wards appointment to the corps. Designed to supplement the output of the Naval Academy, the NROTC trains college stu dents who then enter the Navy upon graduation. My friend Sam Freeloader, who was also a guest, said he would have enjoyed the dinner more if the side dishes had been less fancy. "I'm strictly an elephant and potatoes man myself," Free loader commented. Tlie meal started with ele phant soup, but Freeloader sent his back. He claimed he found a peanut shell in it. Leech bought 1,600 pounds of elephant meat for the associa tion, but 1 doubt any of it will go to waste. Jt's kind of like Chinese food. You eat an ele phant dinner and you're hungry again in two weeks.
