Owned by Mrs. Gerry Crosby of Gerry's Truck Stop near .Weed, Cleo thinks she is either a doq pr people because She was removed from her den before her eyes were Opened and has never known anyone but her canine pro tectors, Hoyt and Pepper, and the truck stop cus tomers. At left Cleo frolics with her mistress and at right she playfully tries to swat Mr. Hoyt, an 80-pound boxer who accompanies hor on woodland walks and serves as her number one bodyguard. With a life filled with many admirers and a diet of rare steaks, Cleo's disposition is described as "sweet" at least most of the time. 6 Month-Old Bay Lynx 'Rules' Truck Stop ! By J. O. MrKINNEV I WEED Three miles out of Weed, on U.S. Highway 97, there is a wayside restaurant with the euphonious name of "Gerry's Truck Stop." One would think Gerry would be boss there, but don't be misled. The boss is a six-monlh-old Bay Lynx. Gerry is the one who says what will be served to the pass ing public, which includes men who shove big diesel engines across country. But even Gerry bows to what is served the lit tle bundle of spotted fur who makes tlic truck stop her home ;anl responds to a whistle like ; well-trained dog. Her name is ('lco, and Cleo cats nothing but -pieces of the best steaks rare. Cleo Is a sweet dlspnsltioncd Day Lynx cat, who has never cen her kind. Born in a den, along willi a twin, she was Itirought out before her eyes ; were open and has neVer been back. Now she thinks the world consists of dogs, people, and truck drivers. Tlwf wect disposition credited to this playful kitten with an ab breviated tail is only partly true. She is most of the time. But let a big 80-pound boxer named (Mr. Hoyt come around in her direction when a bit of raw steak has been laid before her, and her Vswcetness" van ishes in a growl that would make one think all the linns in Africa were on parade under a full moon. Mr. Hoyt claims victories over every dog that has ever come past Gerry's Truck Stop. Yet ho has never smelled once of a bit of steak served Cleo. This fact will have to be cred ited to friendship. Mr Hoyt could crush out her life Willi one bile, but it never enters his big fighting head to do so. Cleo is his little playmate. The little transplanted wildcat Guidance Program , Scheduled LAKEVIEW - Lakcview High School students will have an op portunity to hear represen tatives of the -Slate- System of Higher Education at a special guidance session to bo held at the high school Monday, Nov. 18, at 1:30 p.m. This visit is to supplement the regular guidance program at the high school with first hand infor mation aliout the colleges, giving pertinent facts on the specific requirements for admission, aca demic offerings, tition and inci dental fees, and scholarship op portunities at the various public institutions. There will be stress on the Importance of good high school records in preparation for any type of education, training, or occupation beyond high schinil. Pepper is a pit bull who kills other dogs and never thinks almut it any fur ther. But she thinks the cat which came to her for protec tion at ono-weck-old is a little bit of "all right" and can do no wrong. The wildcat is much like all kittens. She wants to play most of the lime, and her personal habits aro fastidious. She has never had to ix? housebroken. Just make cleanliness available, and she will do the rest. What is in store (or this little animal whose instincts are those of the wild, nobody knows. All who have seen Cleo and heard her history hoX it will work out so she may live to a ripe old age among the people she thinks are her own. Her owner, Mrs. Gerry Cros by, says Cleo thinks she is a dug. Her next guess, if Cleo ever seculatos on such things, is that she might be people. (UPH An estimated 60,000 pounds of a chemical high explosive erupted with a thunderous roar Wed nesday at the Atomic Energy Commission's Medina, Tex., nu clear weapons plant, shattering windows 10 miles away in San Antonio. There was no radiation dan ger, officials emphasized. Officials reported three men "superficially" injured. They were able to walk away from the blast. Residents of the area fled. The blast occurred in a mound-like igloo used to store explosives. An Atomic Energy Commission spokesman said the explosive consisted mostly of TNT. The explosion at 8:35 a.m. PST sent a column of smoke billowing 1,000 feet into the sky. The Federal . State Livestock Marketing Service located 20 miles from the scene reported the blast blew its doors open. Nuclear explosives are kept at Medina. But the base does not have an atomic reactor as first reported. Immediately after the blast, roads around the plant were jammed with cars bumper-to-bumper. (IPI) Earl Clarence Sears, 55, con victed last week of murdering his 8-year-old step . daughter, was ordered by a jury of six men and six women Thursday to die in the San Quentin gas chamber. The juny brought in its recom mendation after deliberating 10'j hours. Superior Judge Hom er Thompson set formal sen tencing for Dec. 4. Sears, an ex-convict, was ac cused of (alally beating Eliza beth Olives with a 16-inch piece of reinforced steel and stabbing her w ith a kitchen knife May 26 at the Cupertino home of his es tranged wife, Clara. The girl was attacked when she tried to stop her step-father from hitting her mother with the piece of steel. Sears also severe ly beat his mother-in-law. Mrs. Frances Montijo. the prosecut lion said. Sears served 17 years in Ore gon State Prison for armed rob bery and was released in 1955.
