Stars aren't supposed to sit around with the peasants. They eitler have lunch served in their dressing rooms or trot off to the Brown Derby or some other flossy spot for lunch. Not Bing. He may be a multi - millionaire, one of the biggest stars in show business, but he's also the least preten tious man in town. And an hour spent with Der Bingle is more therapeutic than a bottleful of tranquilizers, lie's unhurried, friendly and relaxed. His CBS-TV show was being taped at rival NBC which didn't bother him in the slightest. He sat in the warm sun and com mented on Governor Nelson Rockefeller's recent visit to Southern California. That's precisely what you'll be seeing next month when the rubber-faced comedienne plays a straight dramatic role for the very first time in tlto dozen years she's been a television star. Not since 1951 when "I Love Lucy" became an instant hit has Lucille been seen as any thing but a scatter-brained housewife. But on the Dec. 10 segment of "The Greatest Show on Earth" her big blue eyes will be filled with tears as she por trays a circus equestrienne who attempts to save a child from tragedy. Our Lucy? Playing melodra ma? It's the same gal all right. But a generation has grown up believing Lucy on television and Lucy off-screen are one and the same lovable nitwit. Forget it. As president of Des ilu. a wife and molher, Lucille Ball is as zany as Chief Justice Earl Warren. She cuts up only when the cameras are rolling, and even then it's a serious business. On her off-beat equestrienne role she says, "I dig it because it's a departure from Lucy. But I didn't go overboard by play ing the role too strongly. "I was embarrassed the first day on the set because I could n't get into the crying scenes fast enough. I'm not used to weeping for the cameras. But it's fun, and I've been getting a kick out of it." Lucy had to call a halt to shooting on her own CBS series lo do the guest appearance, but she isn't thinking of making it a habit. She's mililantly opposed to much of the seamy drama being televised today. "I'd never player a murderess or a dope addict. I'm simply ap palled by the number of sleazy stories on the air," she said. "People are getting tired of the constant exposure to the tragic side of life that passes for en tertainment in television. "Thank God I'm still doing 'Lucy.' And thanks for 'The Beverly Hillbillies,' 'Dick Van Dyke' and the rest." His home alone is ae In siinr;. It is located on a 180 - foot bluff in the Malibu area over looking tlie Pacific. And its two and a half acres of grounds are a botanist's dream, planted in hundreds of varieties of flow ers, shrubs and trees, almost all of which were not found in California 30 years ago. At the moment Burr's house has 12 rooms (three bedrooms, one bath). But tlie outsized ac tor is in the process of building a new wing which will eventu ally transform the edifice into a 24-room mansion. A widower. Burr certainly does not need that much space for himself. "Quite right," he says. "But some day 1 hope to turn it all over to a foundation of tome kind for the promotion of better communication among people." Functional Each of the new rooms has a definite function there are music rooms, offices, libraries, health room, laundry, gallery, study, recreation room, bed rooms, and an apartment for servants. Meanwhile, the actor's neph ew and niece (Frank Vlti, 2.1, and Phyllis Zillo, 20) live with him, as do his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Johnston Burr, when they aren't In Canada. What was once a stable has been made into a suite of four offices, kitchen, bath and lcdroom. Because his schedule calls for 12 to 18 hours of work each day Burr Is in almost every scene of his hour show he simply doesn't have time to spend an hour before and after work commuting to Malibu. The of fices aro necessary for his staff of 16 who keep his various com panies and projects running smoothly. In sharp contrast to his clos ets at home, Burr's studio apartment is crowded with 55 suits and thousands of neckties, socks, shirts and undergar ments. - The star cheerfully admits that his wardrobe at Malibu consists of blue jeans, canvas shoes and little else. He leads a hearty life that includes lavish dinner par tics at which he plays host to as many as 230 persons. Hon est. Then again, he owns a re spected art gallery In Beverly Hills in which he takes a per sonal interest, affording young painters an opportunity to dis play their work. As a sideline he raises and breeds dogs, Australian silkys. His kennel includes nine of the breed. But he has other pets as well: three Sicilian donkeys named Judy, Joyce and Tony, and two English sheep dogs, both named George. Busy Schedule Burr is called on to make speeches to groups of cttorneys various law organizations and bar associations across the country as a result of his tele vision role. But his schedule is so busy he must, of necessity, keep them to a minimum. He was delighted recently to hear an airline pilot tell him that lus home is a landmark for aircraft. I've planted the entire cliff face with plants and shrubs," Burr explains. "The pilot said it is Die only green cliff along tlie coastline in this area." There are exactly 186 steps leading down to tlie ocean from Burr's property. He frequently makes the climb. Burr has no servants and likes to refer to his home as a "family operation." He admits, however, that when tlie new ad dition is completed he will em ploy help, in addition to the gardener who whips the vegeta tion into some semblance of or der. Asked what he intends to do with all his new rooms until such time as he gives it to an Institution, Burr said, "It will be filled up with family, friends and visitors from all over the world." , . Before he is through. Burr will have invested more than a million dollars in his home, wihich makes him something of a throwback to the grandiose days of movie stars. Actor Burr appears to be more proud of his culinary tal ent than any other accomplish ment. He Is a recognized gourmet among show folk who delight In receiving dinner invitations from Burr. He frequently serves as many as five differ ent wines during the course of a meal which he himself pre pares. Burr specializes In no particu lar dish nor cookery.
